I had a mother get shot up, while holding the baby, it had to crawl across the entire fortress to the stairs, then back across to the meeting hall.

It almost died of thirst/hunger about 5 times before it got there.  They really wait till the last moment, or at least did.

Kid even survived to adulthood.
