My first Fort
« on: December 19, 2010, 10:59:56 am »

So I just finished year one of my first fort, which, like all first forts, sucks ass. It mostly consists of tunnels and random shops. I've got two questions:
A: will someone chack and review my fort, and tell me what to do?
B: if so, tell me where and how to upload my savefile.

Thank you,
A newb.

I'm VERY new.

IE: I don't know how to do that new.

EDIT: as in fun, or as in losing?

Fun is Fun.

Also, just do alt+print screen (or 'prt scr' on some computers), go to imageshack or something, and post the link here.

Oh, I just meant fun fun. It's fine to be new, i'm... well I've some experience, but I still completely fail at things, I'm currently trying to create a dwarven reacter under my meeting hall that powers pumps to create a water fall to make my dwarves happy. I accidently flooded my fort a little, and that was after re-loading.

If it's only a year, chances are you've not gone and done something horribly wrong as you're still alive but you're not late in the game enough to be able to do too much damamge construction wise, but give us a look, and we could help with layout etc.

Well, It's a little tough to see at first, but you're on the right tracks. Personally I build workshops together in one fairly large room, and the meeting hall is in the center with kitchens near it etc. I see you've done some exploratory mining, that's very good but be carefull, if you break into a cavern you could find yourself... learning things rather quickly. Of course you don't HAVE to be carefull!

It's hard to see where the entrance is, I assume it's higher up. Do you have traps in place? The most basic trap, the stonefall trap, is cheap and easy, and good experience for mechanics. You can have a fair few of them up and running to help against goblin baby snatchers. Kobold theives run away as soon as their spotted but if they're in the center of your fort when they're spooted they may fight back. If you have a fair bit of activity at the entrance [Or a dog chained there] then they will get spotted and run, they have [TRAP_AVOID] so it's not easy to kill them early on.

Something that could help is to dig out a large storage room next to the trade depot. Then fill it with stuff you're going to trade to the caravans. When the caravans arrive, it will take less time to get stuff to the trade depot.

In the first screenshot there appears to be a labarynth of twisty little passages, what's that about? Is there going to be a treasure room somewhere in the depths of the labarynth? Or maybe a zoo or a garden?

I do not have traps. I do have warning dogs. the entrance is the upward ranps to the left of the stockpiles left of the depot. I made the maze in case I ever play this in adventure mode. There IS one thing i do need a lot of help with: Farming. my fortress will either fall with random gobby seige, or with no food. most likely the second. i've got arable land, but i dont know how to get "potash"

You've got the right beginnings. Build lots of large plots and grow plump helmets- Food and probably booze supply problem solved. Of course, your dwarves will get sick of them eventually, but that's life.

If you start to run low on food, you can always butcher some animals for a quick bite. Also, sending peeps to gather berries works if you've got some greenery topside.

Also, I don't see a dining room. If you carve out a dining hall and fill it with tables and chairs and statues and carvings, dwarves will get happy thoughts from eating in a great dining hall. And if you make it close to the food stockpiles, they'll have less travel time from picking up food to eating it at a table.

You don't NEED potash, that increases yield from farms but it's a luxury. With some good farmers you don't need it. However if you do want it then it's made in an ashery [b -> e ->  ] I can't remember it, I think it's a. But it's a small list so you can find it if you REALLY want to.

Traps are simple, build a mechanics workshop and get some one assigned to mechanics. They're only made from one stone. Traps are great.
