Hero won't move!
« on: December 12, 2007, 06:14:00 pm »

Around the same time one of my dwarves became a champion he decided to stand on top of the craftsdwarves workshop.  He's the leader of his squad and no matter what orders I give him he won't move.

When I take him off duty he still stands there,  yet he'll move to drink and eat and sleep.  When I order him to change weapons he'll go and get new ones but then go back to that same spot.  I just can't get him to stop 'guarding' the workshop.  Even after demolishing the workshop and building a new one all he did was move over a little.

he's also standing on a set of armour.  No idea why but I think as he was standing so close to the workshop which was given a repeat "decorate with bone" order his stuff got decorated.  So he just stands there on top of his nicely decorated armour all day.

Set him to unarmored and unarmed.

I've had this problem also.  Try giving him a patrol point.  He should start walking towards it.  Then delete the patrol point and station him where you want him to go.  This has generally worked for me.

I had my mayor in the situation that he was picking up equipment. Same happened, he stood on the equipment but didn't pick it up.
Undrafting and redrafting him worked for me. (not off duty, but make him a civilian and draft him back). Oh dammit I forgot, it's a champion you can't undraft him. Sorry. Anyways undrafting would work if you encounter the problem with a lesser military dwarf.

Like I said, turning his weapons and armor off will work.

De-equipping them works fine, but the moment you tell them to put armour back on, they do the same thing.  I thought it might have something to do with decorating with shell some of their armour, so I THREW OUT 2 entire full steel sets of armour+shield+crossbow.

I made 2 new sets and the bugged dwarves went and picked them up one at a time. I thought it might have something to do with them trying to pick up armour from a tile with multiple armours on it.  I thought I solved the problem as the 2 dwarves who wern't moving were now armoured and obeying orders/practising.  But just when I was about to say the situation was solved I see one of the same two dwarves stuck standing in the armour stockpile on top of a single *Steel High Boot* , he was stuck again.

So, I undid EVERYONE'S armour and dumped it, then built 4 entire new sets.  Everyone picked up fine except one dwarf who's stuck in the armour stockpile.

I'm about to give up on this fort!

What causes this and how can I avoid it?  I've played many forts with a big military and never had this problem.  The only thing new I did was try to get rid of some shell by leaving 'decorate with shell' on repeat.

Toady, if you want a save with this happening I can send you my current save as I quit when I saw my poor idiot dwarf stuck again in the armour stocks.

I thought the orphaned boot/gauntlet bug making dwarves go for the same boot over and over again bug was gone since a long time ago. If you've only got 1 boot/glove of a set, that makes an odd number, and if that other glove/boot is gone forever, then whatever dwarf that goes for said orphan boot/glove will be stuck in an endless loop of trying to find the other one. Melt that boot/gauntlet and make a new pair, odd numbers make dwarves angry.

Stop decorating your armor. It fucks with a dwarf's head, only decorate armor that you're leaving for an adventurer, at the moment decorating does to armor what it used to do to bags, bins, and barrels, it makes them useless and confuses dwarves.

Probably because of the orphan boot.  Melt it and see if that helps.

You should give him a new job, pulling levers.

If I put levers adjacent to him will he pull them?  I supose turning him into some sort of armoured control-system isn't a half base use for him....
