With the first wave of migrants came the fort's first cat. This is seen as some kind of omen from the gods and Snaggletooth is placed in command of a newly formed squad, stupid wooden bullets weren't doing anything anyway. Konczewski is promoted to Military Commander and soon starts using his position to gain control of the fortress... Konczewski is elected Mayor under suspicious circumstances.
More migrants arrive as construction on Konczewski's quarters begins. Lucy is promoted to Head of Security by Konczewski and gains a small squad of Security Guards to help her keep the peace.
Another caravan from Casor Pudal, thankfully with a sober looking soldier acting as the Liason rather than the crazy pyro from last year, and Konczewski takes Sulthu, the Broker, into a room and threatens her with imprisonment if she exports any bastilla cannon shells. The trade goes well, a large amount of weapons and materials are traded for box after box of masterfully crafted trinkets that Aaron has been churning out for the past year. Aaron quickly gains celebrity status with the soldiers and craftsmen because of this.

"So, you're sure that these can hold back an attack?" said Konzewski, carefully examining the strange ball-like explosives that had been bought from the traders.
"Yes Laddie," said the demoman (no forumite demomen yet) taking another swig from his fisher berry wine, "if any unfortunate bassturd comes down 'ere, we just pull the triggar and KABOOM!"
Konc bounced one up and down on his palm for good measure, "What about them?" he said as he gestured to the bear traps sitting next to the staircase.
"Have yer ever been bitten by a metal bear?"
"Of course not!"
"Well thass why it's called a 'bear trap'."

As the merchants leave, even more migrants swarm past them and over the bridge. The caravan runs into trouble near the edge of the perimeter.

Ahab woke with a start to the sound of explosions and gunfire, his mind racing with possibilities. He pulls his sword out from under his pillow and runs up the fortress stairs. When he reaches the top he runs out the gate towards the noise. He arrives to find the two caravan guards fighting some strange metal creatures, it took Ahab a few moments to realize that the blood covering the ground belonged to the creatures. The heavy was handling the situation well, hacking away at his attacker with his battle-axe but the engineer had run out of ammo for his pistol and was beating his attacker with it, he clearly needed more help.
Ahab charged in and hacked at the thing, it was already weakened from several bullet wounds but it still fought back. As he cut off the last of it's legs it made a strange metallic sound and seemingly exploded. Ahab was thrown back, missing the nearby trees and receiving only bruises. As he got up he saw that the thing's red light was still on, barely, but a gunshot rang off to his right and struck the thing in the body, shutting it off.
Ahab turned to the shooter and saw Snaggletooth surrounded by a ragtag band in leather armor, some not even armed. "Snaggletooth, what were those things?"
Snaggletooth, took off his protective goggles, came over and helped Ahab up, "Some people call them hopper mines but they're nothing like the things the Combine use. They're strange, they move, bleed, eat and breathe but they're not animals they're not even synth. They're just... wrong."

Due to a lack of metal ores the miners begin a mine shaft to the north-east of the fortress. Not only is the fortress flooded with jewels over the next couple of months but in their eagerness to dig deeper, the miners discover an underground cavern. Scouts are sent out but the cavern is mostly inundated and one scout reported a sighting of a tribe of hostile reptile-men. This report is treated as the work of an over-active imagination.

Bogdan walks into Konczewski's office, carrying the votes from the mayoral elections. "Konc, I've been through these and I don't think your election was entirely fair. I know they're anonymous but most of the votes for you are obviously from people in the military."
Konczewski looked up from his duty roster, clearly uninterested, and replied. "I do not see anything wrong with that. They obviously know me well, comrade."
Bogdan pulled a clipboard out from the bag of votes, "It's just that everyone in the military voted for you, even the security guards voted for you. That new pyro, Mr. Gerlaf or something, wrote his name on his vote and I had Piral (the bookkeeper) look at the rest. Apparently you threatened him when he signed up to be a security guard."
"Bogdan, you are sticking your little nose into matters that do not concern you. Now, go away and forget we ever had this talk."
"No Konczewski! This wasn't a fair election, it was rigged!"
Konczewski pulls a butterfly knife from his desk, gets up and walks around to Bogdan. "Listen here you nosy sooka! Tebya ne ebut, ti ne podmakhivai! You're going to walk out of here or I will make you walk of here! I am in charge now and nobody is going to stop me." He gestured at the door "Now leave."
The problem is that Bogdan was no longer listening, he was barely even breathing. Konczewski watched at Bogdan slowly turned around, suddenly he felt scared.

To be continued...

Bogdan pushed a bewildered Konzewski aside with ease and calmly walked out of the office. Konc hurried out after him in time to bump into one of the security guards. "Which way did Bogdan go!"
The startled security guard pointed down the corridor towards the meeting hall. "He went that way, sir."
"Get the guard, tell them to meet me in the workshops!"
He arrived in the meeting hall only to see Aaron being dragged into the workshop area by a seemingly unimpeded Bogdan. The press of bodies in the, now overcrowded, meeting hall slowed Konc down as he pursued Bogdan. 'Where are the guard?' thought Konczewski as he waded through the crowd. Yelling and issuing commands seemed to do nothing to aid him. When he came out the other side, he saw the guards surrounding the door to the mason's workshop.
Lucy came over, passed him his rocket launcher and briefed him. "Bogdan's inside, sir. He's locked the door and isn't responding. We think he has a hostage. Name is Aaron, stone crafter and part-time farmer."
"I don't think he is a hostage, I have seen this before. We need to move fast." He gestured to the nearby pyro, the one with the axe. "What is your name?"
He replied with a series of unintelligible mumbles.
"He says his name is Aden Gerlach, sir." said a medic wielding a club.
Konczewski punched the pyro in the lower body, "I will deal with you later." He pointed at the medic and then at the fire axe. "Pick that up and get ready near the door. Anyone with a gun, over here with me and wait for a clear shot before firing. The rest of you take up position around the door. When I give the signal, you break down the door and-"
The door opened a crack, clicks, hisses and the tightening of a bowstring sounded around Konczewski as it slowly opened further. Aaron came out with a quick "Don't shoot!" and his hands raised. From behind him came the sound of stone grinding on stone. The guards relaxed slightly when Bogdan also emerged from inside but he was pushing a large object covered with a cloth with relative ease.
They followed Bogdan to the meeting hall where, to Konczewski's annoyance, the crowd parted for Bogdan and his mysterious object.
When he reached the center he cast off the cloth to reveal a lignite statue of Aaron raising a limestone scepter, every detail true to life, spikes of jet and fox bone protruded from the base in between engravings of men armored for battle. Bogdan slowly turned to Aaron, lit up a cigarette, and spoke: "Zis is Strapguards, the Skewers of Danger. It is a reminder of ze message I am about to give you, so listen vell. Thora is coming to destroy 'Ze Confederacy of Jail' and you are one of ze few who can stop him mon copain." Bogdan tossed the cigarette behind him and the statue caught fire.
Bogdan turned pale and passed out but Aaron didn't notice, he whispered "Irol." and reached down his shirt and threw one of his two amulets to the ground. On the amulet was an image of Thora, god of chaos.

We'll see... we'll see...

No seriously, we'll both see. I have no idea what's going to happen.

EDIT: If anyone feels that their character isn't getting enough screentime or hasn't been mentioned for a while, just say so and it will be fixed in 1-3 posts.
