Society is running fine, humans are not on the food chain and children do not have to go out skinning animals with their fathers or see their mothers being sexually assaulted by Vikings anymore. Even adults don't work as hard as they used to, if you're middle class you can just drop everything and vacation for a week (though this is probably rarer than how much play time you had as a kid). Why are you bothering to argue about childhoods being wasted anyway? BACK TO THE SWEATSHOP WITH YOU! HURRY WORK! THERE IS NO TIME TO BE WASTED IN DEBATING!

AUGH! *Implodes in a puff of logic*

You might as well ask: "Why are you bothering to argue [about anything]?"
At which point *implodes again*

Anyway,
anyone else feel they could have benefited from mandatory apprenticeship?

Really just me?

I am of the opinion that it is impossible to waste time, as time is worthless outside of human experience.

Pretty much this.

If all your life is based on working and making money, when do you have the time to use this money in any meaningful way? What do you consider a meaningful way?
What will all that money mean in the long run? You're going to die and it's going to not mean anything at that point anyway.
Ever wonder why people always look forward to the weekends or holidays? Because they want time to indulge in their interests.
There is no wasted time, only the time you spent enjoying your existence.

If all you do is worry about how much you can cram into your lifespan or what you can accomplish, then your not going to be very happy.

Wasted time is time spent doing things you don't want to be doing towards goals you don't want to achieve - and to be honest, for most people, there's a lot of this. Time that is poorly planned, misplaced, spent worrying and fretting... Yeah. Wasted time definitely exists, but it's more about how you experience it than what you do with it.

Wasted time exists, but it is only time that you label wasted.

Get rid of that label.

But what if you enjoy regret?

If ALL my life is spent making money. I'd still have free time, and I plan to use the money.

Would you rather spend the week and weekend hanging out at a bar every night, or spend every weekend at a whorehouse so fancy it's in the listings under "resorts"? You have less time in the latter, and it's more expensive.

My counterpoint: With more money you can afford mindless self indulgence that is more satisfying, even with a fraction of the time. Richer people can afford to do more awesome things.

This is valid. I do worry that I'm not optimally rich enough and am inherently unhappy by wanting unobtainable material goods. At the same time though, I'm unhappy with myself for not obtaining the immaterial abstract accomplishments with my time either. Hence, the only logical conclusion to be satisfied with my life would be to accept what I have and can reasonably work to achieve with my future. I do know this.

However this assumes life satisfaction and happiness, abstract human concepts, have value.  :D

OK, happiness and life satisfaction and stress-free happy happy protected childhood aside:
Modern childhood is not an efficient use of time for the advancement and benefit of society and the future. That you can't disagree with if you believe that goal to have value. However, I think pretty much everyone here has shown that they find the individual's needs and rights a higher priority.

To be honest, neither.
I'd rather play video games with some friends, kick around a soccer ball or slap around a puck, or read a good book by myself out in the backyard.

Of course, everyone has different interests and hobbies. Mine happen to be low cost things I can afford on a modest budget.
And I'm fine with that.

However, this isn't a universal case, hence my point still stands: It's possible to have more awesome in your life even in less time if you had more money. Although I should modify it: It's plausible for some people to have more things they consider worthwhile/awesome in their life even with less time if they had more money. Ha. Rebut that. :)

Man, you wouldn't benefit from having a compulsory apprenticenship imposed on you in your childhood any more than you have benefited from the compulsory general education up to this day. If you haven't used the time spent in school to learn anything useful, then it's reasonable to assume that you'd have the same attitude during your apprenticeship, and similar outcome.
Besides, apprenticeship promotes skills that can very well be uselessly outdated by the time the kid enters job market, while the current education system aims for general knowledge, and the associated flexibility and adaptability to rapidly changing realities of modern world.
In other words, I think you're idealising the whole idea.

Apprenticeship is hardly relevant in the developed world.  There are very few craftsmen to apprentice under.  There are vocational schools for some fields.  Most others require only basic skills (why hello there, public education) plus specific job training that lasts days or weeks rather than years as with apprenticeship.  Some other fields require varying degrees of advanced (read:  university) education.

The education system we have is a better fit for its environment than apprenticeship.  If it wasn't, we'd still have the latter.

Now you can /thread. You're "wasting" time feeling guilty.

Also, because it's sort of relevant....age check? Depending on where you're at in life, there's probably still plenty of time to put up or shut up. I mean, I whined a lot about my wasted life, but did I really ever try to do internships in college? No. Because I didn't really want to, at the end of the day. When I realized that, I quit whining, because I knew I'd made the choice that was right for me, at that time.
