Ah, I found another extinct species that'd be cool to see in DF:

Sarcosuchus - quote, "one of the largest giant crocodile-like reptiles that ever lived. It was almost twice as long as the modern saltwater crocodile and weighed approximately 8 to 10 tonnes."

Quote
When fully mature, Sarcosuchus is believed to have been as long as a city bus...
The largest living crocodilian, the saltwater crocodile, is less than two-thirds of that length...
and a small fraction of the weight...
Quote
Its skull alone was as big as a human adult (1.78 m, or 5 ft 10 inches). The upper jaw overlapped the lower jaw, creating an overbite....
Quote
The huge jaw contained 132 thick teeth (Larsson said they were like "railroad spikes")

Similarly, there also existed the Deinosuchus, which was a similarly gigantic extinct relative of the alligator.

I think their size alone would make them a force to be reckoned with. They could probably crush a dwarf by laying on top. But when you combine their size with their spikes for teeth, the thick scaly hide, enormous strength... scary.

Today (Dec 31) is the last day!  110 distinct animals sponsored now.  It's a very diverse group of beasts that has been selected, so the coming releases should be quite fun as they make it into the game.

Someone should sponsor the wallaby, so we can have  Rocko Modern Life mod.

111 animals! ;)
I just sponsored my second candidate, or at least a variant/relative species, the bumblebee!
The cute, even fluffier cousin of the honeybee.
less agressive, smaller hives, less honey, furrier and has a cute bumbly flight. exists (like bees) in various colours.
Don't believe the lies that are told about their inability to sting, when you try to pet one, they can too!

Areyar likes bumblebees because of their buzzing, bumbly flight and soft fur.

I for one welcome our octopi overlords; rhesus monkey of the seas!
Zombie octopus!

Skeleton octopus! Oh, wait...
Wouldn't that be cartelige octupi?
It would be a beak.

A huge disembodied beak biting at your dwarves...

Without a means of locomotion, being undead is merely a nuisance. :p

Did you notice that bumblebees aren't on the list?  That'll probably just count as sponsoring the generic bee.

Well if toady publishes a list of the sponsored animals we can see if its a own species or not.

Well if cuttlefish get added, we could have undead cuttlefish skeletons consisting of a cuttle bone and a beak.

For those interested, I have sponsored the noble grasshopper.

I was wondering... is there any chance of a fantasy animal sponsorship drive?  They way I imagine it, they could set up a simple web form-based system where registered users can write up a limited number of descriptions (say 20 words or less) for prehistoric or fantasy animals (not humanoids, dragons, demons, lovecraft rip-offs, etc. just fantastic variations of real world animals- 'giant ice spider', 'albino giant cave octopus', 'abominable sand toad' etc.)  These descriptions would be reviewed and vetted by Bay12 and a handful of trusted members, and the ones that are chosen could be auctioned off for sponsorship similar to how the animals in this thread have been auctioned off- people could sponsor their own critters, or ones created by other people.

I dont think this animal drive was meant to discourage fantasy fauna. It just seemed to turn out that way.
