If they need metal tools, there's always shipwrecks. As a native american, however, I don't particularly see that metal tools = civilization. A stable social structure (designated leaders), tools to hunt/farm/gather/etc, structures to protect against weather/predators, literacy, and notable things of value (money, wampum, etc.) to trade with each other are really the more important earmarks for establishing a society.

I do agree that merfolk or whatever should be amphibious, as they would be unable to trade with the dwarves if they weren't.

This is kind of an animal discussion here, guys.  Let's steer back that direction. :)

I wonder if it's too late to suggest custom PREFSTRINGs...

Hey Rainseeker,

Was this animal drive meant to exclude the possibilities of Fantasy animals, such as Bigfoot, or the dreaded Jackolope?

There seems to be some speculation that there should be a fantasy animal drive next time.

I'm sure if there is enough demand we could create a fantasy animal drive!  I'm not sure when we would do that, however.

Actually, I did not realize at first this drive was real animals only, so I was proposing various magical and mythical beasts.
...will there also be giant, sentient and evil versions of the creatures that will make it in this round, or will they be vanilla beasts only?

I'm just going to have an army of frustrated male Kakapos wandering around outside my fortress.  Invaders become angry.  Dwarves become angry.  Hilarity ensues.

Wow, good idea to pick bees.  I was wondering what new animal would really be all that interesting.  Hopefully, we can produce honey and mead and get our dwarves stung to death at the same time!
