They've given me the finger!
« on: December 17, 2010, 09:51:02 pm »

They stopped dumping. Just like that, they quit.

Now my fortress is littered with rock and raw gemstone, yet they refuse to dump anything.
So far i've:
  • Removed the Dump tag from everything with d - b - D and the stocks window
  • Made sure everything's accessable
  • Made new dumping zones after removing them all
  • Have enough dwarves to do it (30 fucking idlers all standing around, thumbs up their arses and i haven't even built a well yet ::) )
  • NOTHING is forbidden, from marble rock to that one Camel Leather Backpack they've all been eyeing for weeks, it's all up for grabs
  • No doors are locked or blocked
  • Made sure there are no job cancellations or anything like that
  • All the stone i want dumped is underground, so are the zones
  • Sacrificed a pile of kittens to Armok
Is this the end of the line? IS THIS THE FUN I HAVE BEEN HUNTING FOR?  :-\

I just don't get it anymore...

How about dwarves gather refuse in the options?
Also do you use any utilities?

All dwarves are ordered to gather it and ignore anything from outside, so that can't be it.
Not using any utilities.

There's one standing right in the middle of the designated dumping zone, taking a break as if to mock me and my petty attempts at tidying up the fortress.

If you are really desperate. Put up your save file and see if one of us can do it and send it back.

Ok trying things now. And your pheobus does not play nice with my ironhand

Where exactly is your dump site?
Also why are your fishing and water gathering sites all.... wrongly placed?

Yeah sometimes it *looks* like they will start but then they just put on a coolface and stand there/go back to drinking.
Frustrating, i know.

I've got good news and bad news
The good news is i got them to dump items

The bad news is by "them" i mean, only these 2 dwarves.
Cerol Onulgakiz
Udil Rigothlaltur

Edit: Okay it seems like only 2 dwarves are dumping things at a time???
Every so often, one dwarf will stop dumping and another, random dwarf, will take his place. Meanwhile, 37 idlers

You have too many refuse hauling tasks queued up which cannot possibly be completed due to their destination being unreachable - I deleted the two outdoor refuse stockpiles and every dwarf immediately started dumping items.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You sir, are a god.
I never figured the graveyards would affect dumping, im sure i deleted the refuse piles before but not the graveyards, this instantly solved it.
I am very thankful but also curious; how did you figure this out?
Thanks again, and thanks to you too Acperience for the effort!
I love you both.

It wasn't the graveyards - it was specifically the 2 refuse stockpiles waiting to be filled with animal skeletons.

The exact same thing can happen if you put a stone stockpile in an area and then lock the area off before it's filled - other dwarves will stop hauling other stones (e.g. to ore stockpiles).

Damn, i didn't mean to sound ungrateful.
Honestly, i really appreciate the time and effort you put into it, i don't know how else to express my thanks but again:
Thank you very much.

Bollocks, i should've noticed that! I even came across older posts where that same issue was discussed.
Honestly, i'm a little embarrased by it. Anyway, thanks again both of you for helping me.
