Some kind of egg laying spider, since chickens probably wouldn't like being underground all the time.

I'm not entirely sure at what point in Dwarf Fortress anyone cared about what people liked. Well, we care when the Mayor likes Slade or something equally ridiculous, but only so we know how high up the priority list the Magma Quarters need to be. :p

On the other hand, we have purring maggots...

What many of you forget is that if Toady does something, he does it right. We know we'll get sheep, but only one kind of sheep? Probably not, seeing as there are quite a number of different sheep out there. He didn't put in a generic "small fish", so why should he put in a generic sheep? Same with chickens and pigs, really.
Just because he'll introduce 16 new domestic animals doesn't mean that they are all radically different.

Statistically speaking, 50% of dwarf fortress' animals are fish, 40% are monkeys, and more than 10% of statistics are made up on the spot for comedic effect rather than painstakingly researched. Or counted. **** counting.

The problem with all this is that a species cannot, by definition, reproduce with another species (naturally under normal conditions). "Breeds" in DF are abstracted by castes and size and whatever, as different breeds can still breed with each other. Therefore, there will be ONE kind of sheep (ovis aries) unless non-domestic sheep are considered domestic (which is possible, as wolves, tigers, swine, and the like can be tamed).

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that mentioned about 6 or 7 different domestic animals, the only one significant that I remember being cave tortoises. I don't remember where I read it, though.

We have Giraffes and Rhinoceri incoming.

I don't think those count towards the domestic animals, though.

Also, donate enough money and Toady will put in Harp Seal so we can club their babies and eat them.

Breeds aren't specified in the raws. Breeds are generated dynamically in DF, as animals are generated with random traits, and then they breed like normal. Certain traits become more dominant, and thus a distinct breed comes into existance.
