How do you interpret the intro?
« on: December 17, 2010, 11:59:31 am »

This is what I see.

There's an entrance to a fortress, with some dwarfs walking around outside

Zoom in, and you see some soldiers sparring
Across a drawbridge, there is a miner thats mining.
Suddenly, he breaches the HFS, Drops his pick into the HFS, and the demon comes out of the pit and screams at him.

That's what I see. What about you?

[EDIT: The screaming bit could either be that, or the miner looking into the HFS then screaming in terror.]

"You fear to go into those mines. The Dwarves dug too greedily and too deep."

It isn't a new Dwarf Fortress version until we're made to fear some kind of regular creature.  Carp, Elephants, Unicorns, Badgers, and now Mosquitos.  I've got 5 dorfBucks on the next one being plagues of groundhogs.

2D magma flood and before it, the chasm and possibly the river (don't remember if there was any water in the intro).

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Yeah, I see exactly the same things. I think it's the HFS that the miner is digging into especially because he's digging a blue stone ( Adamantine)

So... I think I interpreted the intro as *some annoying thing that popped up before I could play the game*

Yeah I always assumed the miner breaches HFS, drops the pick.  With him mining horizontaly and punching into an open space...well theres nothing it could really be but a cotton candy stand.  Personally the little grunt of surprise i've always read as:

'oh shit, look, its a horror of the underworld and he's coming to say hi'

Also, in my eyes that isnt 2 dwarves sparring but a dwarf and a goblin battling it out, dunno why but its always been a gobbo for me

Dwarves mucking about outside the fortress entrance.

Couple of military dorfs sparring.

A miner minin' the good stuff before he breaches the HFS and a demon eats his face.

Point of view of a goblin getting dropped from a tower, admiring the mountains for the last time.

Dwarves marveling at 50 z-level high entrance.

ZOOM WHOOM WHOAH

Dwarf throwing a tantrum and attacking a forge.

ZOOM HOLY CRAP RIVER

Dwarves duking it out over last two-humped camel cheese

ZOOM PRECARIOUS BRIDGE FLYING BAT WHOAH EVERYTHINGS BLUE

Dwarf obviously mining out some delicious microcline, accidently unleashes the hidden kitten stockpile and gets catsplosioned.

...What? That's how I interpret it. :D

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

Couple military dorfs sleeping in front of the door.

Some inefficient smithing (really that shallow in back in 2D a smith hardly had easy access to anything better than copper, unless you had a TON of haulers willing to walk the 100+ tiles to the depths.)

The cave river.

Some sparring one will surely die(the presence of adamantine gear seems to enhance the inefficiency of the smithing operation.)

A remarkably unguarded and un-redlined chasm.

The next part I shall put in spoilers both for the sake of normal spoilers and the significantly different hfs from back in the day.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And there is my analysis.

The screen becomes enveloped in orange before the menu appears. I conclude from this that the yelp at the end is the miner's last cry before his face is incinerated.

I read from someone a while back who supposed the ending was the dwarf meeting a Spirit of Fire.

That intro was made back in the 2d version. It's supossed to be a usual fort with a miner digging and striking the magma river (which would flood about half the time). Thus the river (the first landmark).

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.
