My dwarfs usually engrave the local gov symbol (a forgotten beast), their civ symbol (a harp), or one of the many times I switched my nobles (usually the mayors). My favorite has to be an engraving of a dwarf I named after a friend being shot to death. It's the only one like that, that I've found, and it's at the entrance to my 2nd mausoleum.

Well at the moment my engravers are doing:

1. The unskilled ones are doing dogs, forgotten beasts and the various deities.

2. The first usual subject of my experienced engraver is this gizzly bear killing various humans over different attacks. So far I've had engravings of two different battles

3. Most worryingly though is that his other subject is expressing another dwarves love for cats. Not his own love. His Long term acquaintance's (both original 7). Strange...

Most of all? Suns and stars.

Suns, suns, suns, suns ... a blazing sun is the symbol of the government, a many-pointed star is the symbol of the civilization. On top of this one of the dwarves keep engraving shining suns for no reason at all.

edit: the dwarves live in the caverns of a freezing biome but i doubt this has anything at all to do with their sun obsession

They're just being smart-asses. You should flood the fort with magma to show them who's boss.

My dwarfs love to engrave the journey of Ushus Pointwhirled the human tamer of giant eagles. (Actually artists in general love him since there are three artifact statues of him in the Great hall.)

The engravers love that journey so much it's no surprise what image showed up when a rock construction was accidentally engraved.

EDIT: As long as I'm saying that it happened, I might as well detail how it happened.

I'm pretty sure that most people would know that the basic smoothing designation can overlap with the various digging designations. Apparently however, when the digging designation is a channeling designation, and the the floor is taken out, the smoothing designation will remain in place even over open space. If a wall is built under that space, before or after it is channeled it doesn't matter, the smoothing designation will mutate to an engraving designation and the top of the wall will be engraved. (It will show up as an engraved floor tile and the engraving can be viewed but there won't be any "-detailed-" prefix if you look at it.)

My current engravers engrave the following:

-Lots of circles. Even the skilled ones.
-Lizards. Because the mayor doesn't like them, presumably. Guess what half the statues are, too.
-The apparently horrific death of people in the area I embarked by the hands of... something. ???
-The death of humans attacking said something (A night creature, I think.) :-\
-A forgotten beast, the symbol of my civilization. :o

I'm wondering if I should have named this fortress instead of going with the randomized Lampshatter.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

Engraved on the wall is a well-designed image of a elf and dwarf by Reg Ekirnish. The dwarf is striking down the elf.

In my small tomb there are at least 4 of similar pictures. And in a mountain wall as well - I wonder if my dwarves like striking down the elves?

I haven't started engraving yet, but i have made a few statues. Most relate to my dwarves laboring to establish my fort and dwarves striking down goblins.

I do have one of Lapama Glistenedstrife.
Lapama is cringing while Limul Wealthyglowed the Gilded Flame the dragon is striking a menacing pose. This of course relates to that time in 533 when the Gilded Flame smashed Lapama's upper left arm.

I am getting an awful lot of my duchess, who is a pretty cool girl actually.

She's also a legendary engraver. HMMMM.

Currently they are engraving death and destruction because a population of ~200 crashed down to 41 after a Series of Unfortunate Events*.

*Now a brand new novel, featuring a cyclops, a mountain titan, two forgotten beasts, demons, goblins, faulty mist generators, floods and death!

I had a fort in 40d where I had one legendary engraver. He had several master piece engravings of a dwarf (presumably himself) making masterpiece engravings (likely of himself making other master piece engravings of etc etc)

I can't see most of my engravings, since I haven't cleared the stone out yet, but my engraver seems to like dwarves, toads, elk, and there's one image of a cloud in there. I'm pretty sure he hasn't seen a cloud since we dug out the fort. Nostalgia?

He's also got a few of our two four artifacts, but hey, who wouldn't engrave legendary crossbows and querns? and an earring I forgot. and a crown he forgot.

Checked a random room, in hope of finding out the details of some of the more confusing battles...

We have a beautiful succession of Urist McCraftsdwarf holding a masterpiece cup, holding a masterpiece crown, being elected mayor, being unelected mayor, back to holding up a masterwork amulet...

Also have a LOT of different dwarves with steel battleaxes striking down various goblins, although I remember the squad hiding inside while the traps took out most of the gobbos...

Mostly, though, Yarere Blossomsopened the Elf, who tamed Giant Eagles here about 1500 years ago.  And Frigidtoned the Decent Notch, a raw adamantine sceptre I made about 4 forts ago in this world.

And one of the current mayor surrounded by flies, looking terrified...

And now I have an artifact adamantine crown that unites some of the things that make up the game (diamonds, toads, cats, menacing spikes of cloth, the foundation of the fortress), it pops up not only on the newer artifacts, but also regularly on the new engravings.
