Of course. The religious reasons I've mentioned don't count at all. ::)
That's an exception that I assumed would be assumed. My point is that vast numbers of non-jewish children in the US have their parents convinced to circumcise them only so the doctors can make money.
::)

The American Pediatrics Association doesn't recommend it, and circumcisions on the US are on the fall. So I very much doubt it's some kind of nefarious "Doctors plot" to make money.

It's not that benefittial hygiene-wise either.

Kids get rashes and infections really easy unless you're meticulous with hygiene, and large flaps of skin are the hardest thing to deal with.  My kid had gigantic cheeks.  They literally rested on his shoulders when they were at their largest.  It was really hard to clean his neck, especially since he was a strong kid and would fight it like hell.  It was hard to clean without hurting him in the process.  So at a couple points, he got a thin line of rash deep inside the flap of skin around his neck that would spread out from there and look terrible and bother him greatly.

Imagine this same kind of problem on a penis.  Except it's not something you just need to clean once in a while.  You have to clean it every time he needs a diaper change.  Which means you need to unfold and wipe off every flap of skin in that area as much as a dozen times a day for at least 18 months.  Diaper rashes SUCK, and I'm sure the amount of them they would get if they hadn't been circumcised would at least double, and be located on a much more sensitive area.  Usually it happens just beneath the scrotum, where it can be hard to clean thoroughly if they're not cooperating.  I'm sure this would have caused them much more pain as a whole then what they went through getting circumcised.

Most of the world goes uncircumcised without having any serious problems in regards to infections and whatnot.

You'd be surprised quite how easy it is to just give in. As for Matzah being horrible, oh god IT IS. But we deal with it because it's our religion.
I think I'd take the terrible taste in my mouth for a minute or two over having my penis chopped up, thank you very much.

My two cents is that I'm circumsized and I'm not a fan of having a scar instead of a foreskin.

There are actually medical benefits.  It reduces risks from insufficient hygiene considerably, which is a major concern for children.  This is the main one.  I've never even heard of any relation to STDs.  As for the analogy to date rape, I'm circumcised.  I'm pretty sure I don't feel anything like someone who's been raped.

Like I said.  It only freaks out people who've never had it done, or those who had it done past infancy.  I may be stepping over the TMI line here, but how many of you are circumcised?  I doubt any of you who are speaking against it actually are.  I've never heard a single complaint from anybody who actually was.  Ya, it was probably painful for me when it happened, but I really couldn't care less now.

I had my kids circumcised, and I'm glad I did.  I've never had to deal with being non-circumcised, so if they ever had any associated problems, I would be at a disadvantage in caring for them.  I'm also thankful I didn't have to go through a ton of ritual fondling every time I changed a diaper just to keep them clean and free of infections.  It's also long over with now, and I sincerely doubt either of them will ever give it anymore thought than I have.

Getting it done as an adult is not very comparable to getting it done as an infant, either.  Kids go through so much in infancy.  Both my kids were circumcised the day they were born, and I'm sure cutting of the umbilical cord and opening their eyes to the air for the first time were far more shocking than the circumcision.  Such things heal much much faster in infants than in adults, kids are more physically and emotionally resilient in general, and yes I do think it matters that they're not going to remember it.  The procedure is probably completely forgotten within a couple hours of it happening.  There's probably associated pain when cleaning it for a few days, after which there's about a week longer before it's completely healed and there's no chance that they'll ever think about it again at least until they're teenagers and might ask a couple questions out of curiousity alone.  As an adult it doesn't heal as fast, you're a much more emotionally complex and fragile being, the experience isn't likely overshadowed by massive changes in your reality happening at the same time, and you will remember it for the rest of your life.

I would get circumcised simply for the health benefits alone. Say someone has a hunting cabin, say up is Alaska. No soap, no electricity, simply a wood stove, guns, and a fishing pole, I wouldn't want to worry about infections then. Especially since I would have to hunt very dangerous animals. Religious circumcision is completely fine. I wouldn't pay a doctor. I would probably use a Rabbi. It would give the Synagogue some more money(?). I think the Jews have quite possibly the greatest, most intriguing culture in the world. And I feel this should be preserved. After all, my religion exists only as a religion founded upon Judaism.

My conclusion: Circumcision is fine. Just use a Rabbi.

Yes, it's fine to get circumcision if you want one, but it's not fine to perform it on people who can't make that decision. I mean, would you tattoo your baby?

Oh, and you only need warm water to wash yourself. And I don't recall any major penile infection epidemics on the Western Front in WW1, even though most Europeans are uncut. I doubt conditions can get much more unhygienic than living in trenches.

I actually second this, sort of. We're not Jewish, but after hearing horror stories of botched circumcisions at the hospital (you may wind up with someone with little to no training in the procedure doing it) we took some friendly advice and found a pediatrician who is also a mohel (the guy who actually specializes in the bris, not necessarily a rabbi)

The guy did a fantastic job because he's probably done thousands of them in his life. Although, this made for a few nervewracking moments when, as he's got my boy's junk in this tiny medieval torture device, he's bantering about the election and the state of my alma mater's football program and waving his hands around and I'm thinking, "I know you could probably do this with your eyes closed, but a little attention maybe?!!?"

Exactly! These people do this and pretty much only this for a living. These people are comparable in training to Jewish butchers. (I know a terrible comparison but they are very highly trained.)

I wouldn't want to tattoo anything because it is not allowed as covered in the Old Testament. Well wait till the Bar Mitzvah if people think they should be allowed to decide.

Because they're not newsworthy stuff.  Have any kids?  Diaper rashes are an ordinary, non-dangerous thing.  They are really painful, though, and happen frequently around small folds of skin where stuff might collect and irritate it.  The rashes I mentioned around my kid's neck are heat rash, and also really common for infants.

Indeed. When Jewish people actually feel the need to do something right, they do it the best. The rest of things? Not so much. As one of the Isreali rabbis I met said, "Isreal is a country of superlativeness. Cutting edge of technology, pioneering military weapons... And horrible drivers. And where does it get this trait? Us Jews."

Some things? Yeah, tattoos should be voluntary. But for other things, I'm fine with the choices my family, and I can't imagine how it will give me negative effects in the long run, and who knows? It might just stop me from getting foreskin cancer or something. Sounds absurd, but the people who think they're the least likely to get something bad always do. Murphy's law or somesuch.

My two cents is that I'm not and I'm very, very happy I have all my dick. One thing I have to thank my dad for, that he didn't continue that sick ritual.
