Ever heard of averages?

Ever heard of a terrible idea? Why do you let a gossip newspaper change you're opinion like a light switch?

Did they change it, or reinforce it? Also, are you stalking me?

Oh yes I am stalking you. I have a small bronze statue to you that I sacrifice small animals to.

Well, that would explain why you know enough about me to judge what influence gossip papers have on me.

They apparently have enough influence for you to take what they say as fact.

I guess pointing out that I make a point of not reading gossip papers unless someone's breathing down my neck for references at this point wouldn't have any effect?

So what you're saying is, you didn't have any references for the presented info, and only went and found them when pressed to?

Do you have references at hand when trying to defend that men and women are exactly equal? I didn't even consider needing references until I was asked to provide them.

Logic.

My, it's getting toasty in here ::)

As it's been said in this topic already, no one is inherently better at anything than the next person, it's all about upbringing. People who assume that a whole demographic should be judged on averages and stereotypes are ignorant.

If one is going to enter an argument about a given subject and use the argument of a scientific study, then one is expected to have references at hand.

You mean the same kind of logic I used to draw my conclusions?

If one is going to enter an argument about a given subject and use the argument of a scientific study, then one is expected to have references at hand.
That was a sore misunderstanding which I should've addressed earlier. Nowhere did I specifically refer to scientific studies, until someone asked me to back my views up. Where you got the impression was most likely at the point someone pointed out that only a sample size the size of the whole earth's population would suffice for my assertions, which I tried to refute by drawing an analogy to medicinal studies, that often show small, but markable effects with far smaller group sizes.

I do realize now that my viewpoint differs so much from the general consensus that I should've prepared better before responding though. I'm sorry that I'm at this point incapable of properly responding to some of you.

If that was directed at me, I wonder where you got the impression that I was at any point referring to specific persons, or even the idea that these statistics should be used in situations in which statistics are not applicable?
