When I bring up the fact that I was raised a vegetarian, people sometimes react with rants about how parents shouldn't deprive their kids of meat, and shouldn't force things like that on them.

if a parent doesn't have the right to do what they feel is best for the kid, what rights do they have?

A parent has the right to teach their kids whatever they want. (Some exceptions.) You have the right to both circumcise you're kids AND raise them vegetarian. No matter what you do you're gonna get crap for it.

The biggest one with us is censorship.  We don't censor anything around our kids.  We encounter plenty of people who are horrified like "OMG I would never use those kinds of words around a child!  Your kids are going to grow up to be serial killers!"  Then we encounter plenty of other people who are all high fives about it and think our kids are the coolest they've ever met.

Similar reactions to the name of our younger kid.  His name is Grim.  Some people are horrified.  Others instantly fall in love with it.  Personally, I think it fits him like a glove.

Whatever the issue, when it comes to kids people get emotional.  You're a horrible horrible person to anyone who disagrees, and a hero to anyone who agrees.

It's useless to talk about this "right" as a binary thing that parents either have or don't have.  Parents are generally not permitted the right to kill their children after birth (despite the fact that many parents throughout history have felt this was best for their kids), but they are still permitted to make many other kinds of decisions.

You are clearly a much bigger troll than I am and so I concede defeat.

No trolling.  That's actually his name.

No, I meant that you have successfully trolled him (even if he doesn't know it yet) and a good fraction of everyone he meets.

I hope he takes up medicine.

You should see his grumpy face.  It's perfect.

But seriously.  I think it's cruel to give kids ordinary names.  When I think of "Grim" as a name, I think of determination and character.  And we've ensured that he will never be a forgettable person.  Our first kid's name is Hiro.  And he predates Hiro Nakamura, damnit.  It's pretty funny.  People were horrified by that name, too, until Heroes came on tv and then everyone loves it and asks if he's named after that character...

I'm locking this thread.

ThreeToe deleted my troll thread. Toady sent a message. It made my throat dry, my palms started sweating, I looked around the room nervously, my face started was red. It filled me with a vague fear that I was messing around with a higher power that I had no idea of.

In short I'm locking this because it can't end well.
