Yeah, the problem with that experiment was that the woman just wasn't that threatening.

I think I'll just say it now and all feminists have to shut their traps and all sexist men have to shut their traps about women being inferior. Problem solved.

What do you mean you want to be treated equally? Fine. *Punches out woman* What? I don't like you. You said you wanted to be treated equally. I punch out guys I don't like."
I'd think that anyone you punched would have good reason to be upset.
True, but I have a nasty temper. The point was, we're raised from babies that "it isn't OK to hit girls". Never once in my life have I been told "it isn't OK to hit boys".
I saw this, and I thought quite similarly.

After many a frustration dealing with women (plenty of the time, my sisters when growing up), I have realized the major flaw in the "boys can't hit girls" rule when growing up; especially if girls bear witness to the rule being mentioned in front of them. Like most kids, they'll find a way to exploit it as much as possible in order to get what they want. This is a constant fear I have; and to try to prove that, as much as my nephew can't get away with his wild behavior at times, my niece(s) can't get away with pulling the BCHGs card all the time. I mean, if they're old enough and smart enough to come up with ideas and ways to trick adults, I think like a child and outsmart them and make them accidentally learn a lesson by their own mistakes (justice and lessons delivered via fridge logic; in a way, a form of mutual punishment if I know both parties are guilty).

I hate to sound like a generic asshole, but my views on the matter of feminism and chivalry is that I no longer care for chivalrous acts (me being the one delivering them), and feminism should be about balance, not dominance. I'd rather do something nice out of respect, than as a moral obligation that yields no reward or acknowledgment, or the dreaded "Nice Guy" card. In a sense, I do somewhat understand the caution towards most nice guys (out of my own fridge logic at times), but there are people who are just good natured.

In agreement with Megaman, just shut the fuck up and find a compromise everyone can agree with. Open a pack of beer and BS (IE- Chat in this context) the problems away like reasonable adults. The Gender War looks like a preschool riot.

The only thing I will contribute before this thread goes down in flames: The goal of feminism is to create gender equality. The issue is that everybody on both sides of the gender fence seems to think it means establishing female superiority. If anyone is suggesting otherwise... they are by definition not talking about real feminism, only the popular (and incorrect) conception of feminism.

what you mean by "all feminists" is "all sexist women." additionally 'feminist' does not imply a female gender.

Well that rule is obviously not feminist since it establishes different standards for different genders. The feminist version would be "it isn't OK to hit anyone".

Retro called it early.A lot of people confuse 'second wave' feminism or radical feminism for normal feminism, which is completely the wrong place to start from. Being a feminist doesn't mean you hate men and either want them eliminated or as your slaves.

The reason why they always arrest the man in domestic disputes is that domestic abuse is still a huge problem in this country and it's very, very, very frequent for abused women to lie about it.  This is also the reason why people are more likely to intervene when a woman is being assaulted in public.  We know that there are plenty of abused women out there.

The problem with feminism is that everyone is too busy attacking strawman arguments to know what feminism actually is.  The zero tolerance policies that progressive areas have adopted towards abuse of women are not an overcompensation.  They are an overwhelming response to a very real and very persistent problem that needs to be taken seriously.

My dad once got arrested once in a "domestic dispute" despite being an incredibly gentle man.  He got over it and moved on with his life.  But millions of women are abused each year.  They are trapped in a situation that they can't take control of.  The police need to help those victims.  You can't push things too far, but realize that justice isn't a slippery sloppy, it's a matter of balancing competing concerns.  Who's in trouble here?  My dad who was out the next morning or a woman who remains trapped in an abusive relationship?

Anyone who thinks that the work of the feminists is done needs to actually read a little about what the feminists actually want.

I think the source of a lot of anger that gets misdirected against feminism is that, to use your example, there are also a lot of men trapped in abusive relationships (whether physically, verbally or emotionally abusive it doesn't matter) that few if any ever report to the police because they're afraid they'll be laughed out of the station or laughed out of court, and people see that and misdirect their anger from 'why isn't there any support for men in this situation?' to 'why do women get all the support in these situations?'

On that note it gets me really angry when men's advocacy groups get treated like they're all raving chauvinist assholes, when they're just trying to get neglected areas of men's well being recognition the same as feminist groups.

Yeah that's a man's world alright. If someone is honestly screwing with you, the culture tends to judge you on your ability to handle the problem yourself. When you're attacked, people expect you to fight back, and if you don't, you're judged on that.

I agree with "men and women are equal".

What I don't agree with is "women are superior to men".

I've joked in the past that men are superior to women because men can play darts whilst even professional female darts players suck. :p That's stopped a lot of arguments straight in the tracks. "Tell me one thing men are superior to women in!" Immediately: "Darts." "Oh, shit, yeah."

Frankly I think feminism's a load of crap. Happens around here a lot, peopl harp on that women and men are equal, which is fair enough, then a bloke raises his hand to a women and a half dozen men jump on him and beat the crap out of him. So, women are equal, yet can't expect the same consequences for their actions?

But there's the problem.  When a female is involved if you fight back, you're a criminal.  If you don't, you're a weakling.  It's a lose/lose, and the "boy's are stupid, throw rocks at them" mentality which takes advantage of this seems to me as if it's gaining prevalence.

The problem I believe, is that the first and second waves had their reasons. But here's  the problem. The third wave I think threw this whole thing into "Women are superior to men" and that is the general attitude of feminism these days. This view is especially popular around Europe. My sister is a feminist and she claims that it isn't about "women are better than men" it's about equality. Frankly if they wanted equality they shouldn't call it "feminism", as for the "guys shouldn't hit girls" the best thing to do here is try to hit only in self defense and if a woman is ACTUALLY trying to hurt you. Fight! If you think you shouldn't fight her cause she's a woman. You might be a man and are probably much stronger. And remember: Black belts ARE NOT as tough as most people think. The training they get is not very good. Not here at least.
