So I just got back into dwar ffortress after not having played since the big update, and I'm having a problem with my military, you see, I give ALL my dwarves names, however whenever a military dwarf makes a notable kill, it's name resets back to whatever it was originally, anyone care to shed some light on this problem?

That's weird ... I name all my military dwarves too and I don't get this problem.

Or is the resulting name just so long that you can't read your custom name anymore?

Nope, it gets rid of their nickname i gave them and goes back to whatever there name was before.

Are you using DT? I don't, and I never notice anything.

Yeah, dwarf therapist nicknames get erased occasionally, mostly in battle I've found. Probably for the reason you just said, namely, getting a title.

ya they do get new titles when they get notable kills and it doesnt matter where you nicked your dorf before, with DT or ingame. However their profession name remain so it's probably a good idea to make descriptive professions then?

I think this is because of the configuration on the init file (or somewhere around that) about where dwarven nicknames are place.

Yeah, go to your config files and there should be a entry for nicknames and how they're displayed. If you choose REPLACE_ALL or something, custom names will show up fine.

I already have the init set for replace_all as far as nicknames go, I use dwarf therapist for naming though, so my guess is it's just DT screwing up, however that appears to be the only tool available for managing my dwarves so I suppose I'll just have to deal.
