Maybe something evaporated it. Or maybe there's some failsafe we're not seeing that prevents water from getting in. Or maybe the game's just goofy and the water was never calculated to interact with that area until he showed up, and it was frozen at the time so no flooding.

Yesterday I saw two bridges in an human village, arranged rectangular to each other, so that it was impossible to cross any of them... and there wasn't even a river.

Think like a -human-.  Two intersecting bridges are impassible -- and you've got to get past it somehow, right?  So build two bridges, one to cross each of the two intersecting bridges!
