I'm curious to see what people think of this. Even putting aside the obvious "Will the world end then?" question, you've still got to wonder why the Mayan calender ends then.

The same reason that the week ends on Saturday (or Friday or Sunday, depending).  It's an arbitrary cycle of arbitrary size that started on an arbitrary date, but is still useful for record-keeping.

Me, I've got an epic party planned somewhere in the southern Californian wilderness.  Think pagan revel + electric guitars.

I have a theory that Zombie Jesus, Vampire Buddha, and Cyborg Zeus will gome down from Awesome Heaven and kick all our asses.
Just because they can.

Well, I have my plans set to have a party. If the world ends, it's a last hurrah; if it means a new beginning, it's a celebration because we still live, until the calendars get miscalculated again.

Probably the exact same reason we'll stop making calendars: to confuse the hell out of the cricket people of the future and make them believe in the end of the world. I mean, we could print calenders for the year 3000 if we wanted to...but what would be the point?

Who knows? Maybe the Mayan calendar was a means of fractal-mapping/procedurally generating time predictions. 2012 is as deep as the picture goes.

We could bet money on how soon the History channel comes up with a new doomsday prediction after January 1st, 2013.

The way I figure, the date is exactly as meaningful as when we flipped a millenium.  Didn't stop anyone from partying then.

Also, the Mayan doomsday stuff, is not held by anyone of any merit. The person who postulated the idea, had a PhD in Literature, believed that he was contacted by Mayan ghost while he was on LSD.

It's my understanding, and I'm probably way wrong, that rather than muck about with leap seconds and so forth, the Mayans used calendars with expiration dates.  Or thereabouts.

Its more complicated then that. The Mayian idea of time, is very different then the current concept of time.

Keep in mind that the Mayan Calender's Great Cycle already ended on March 13th, 830, June 15th, 1224, and September 18th, 1618, but none of those ended the world either.  It's all just so stupid. I wonder if Double Downs Man thinks the alien masters will return in 2012?

good thing we are basing our current knowledge of the world on a calendar created about ten billion years ago, would hate to think we have actually made scientific advances in that time
