Google search for magmawiki yields spoofed page titles
« on: December 15, 2010, 12:59:27 pm »

When I run a google search for magmawiki, the top result that comes up is for lists the web address for magmawiki, but the page title is listed as being "Cialis Online...cialis without prescription", and when I hover my mouse over it to see google's preview, it shows the real magmawiki main page, but with the words "The Dwarf Fortress Wiki" replaced by "Pharmacy 2010 - Cialis online"

Typing magmawiki's address into the address bar yields the real, legitimate version of the page, but...

After seeing the weird results from google, I tried running a bunch of google searches for a bunch of random other topics, and all the results of those searches came out normally, so I don't think that its a virus on my computer or a problem on google's end, so it makes me suspect that some sort of malicious code may have been inserted into magmawiki's programming or something.

Has anybody else seen this happen or know what is going on???

The wiki server has indeed been hijacked by spammers - if I fetch "http://df.magmawiki.com/" using wget, it's loaded with spam, while overriding the user agent with that of Firefox gives me something looking slightly more normal; explicitly fetching "http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page" gives me the proper content no matter what, but fetching "http://df.magmawiki.com/" should have redirected to that page in either case.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

A quick test confirms that it has not been fixed.

[edit] Locriani (aka Briess) is currently in the process of cleaning up the wiki server (read: nuking it from orbit and remaking it - fortunately, the wiki database is on a different server).

Is that why the site is down?

I was just about to post something if I couldn't find a topic here about this.

What sort of attack was it? Did someone just edit a bunch of the pages? Or was it more serious?

Everyone knows dwarves pass knowledge through a mass collective, fueled by alcohol. Hence their inability to sustain themselves over long periods with water; they lose the dwarven empathic connection, and become singular and... sane. Which in turn drives them crazy!

Somebody managed to exploit some sort of flaw in MediaWiki (seemingly caused by bad file/directory permissions) 2 days ago to upload a rather insidious backdoor script capable of inserting spam, uploading files, and some sort of activity logging (which appears to just keep track of when search engine bots were shown the spam and when it flagged users as "banned" and stopped showing them the spam when they got suspicious).

The wiki server is in the process of being rebuilt.

What are you saying? Magma is just right for them! A hot magma bath is just what they need to fix their attitude!

What is this, a therapy session? We don't need to console someone because they're upset about a fucking video game. Grow a beard, son, and take off those elf ears!

Any idea when the wiki will be back up? Every-time it goes down like 4 of my dwarfs get Fey moods (right now its a fell one though... at least it will be entertaining). Also we need like a pdf survival guide for when the wiki goes down, something that has all the mineral tables and such I would just make an archive of the site, but that would require a massive amount of storage space.

You could just save just the pages with the most relevant/potentially relevant and/or least intuitive information to your machine without downloading the rest. And for any articles that don't rely on diagrams/pictures, you could save them in the "Webpage, html only" format setting to save space.

Or you could burn the saved wiki articles to a DVD; they're cheap and they hold 4+ gigabytes of data.

Nah, you only need the most current version of pages and optionally the current version of images and no talk pages, thats only 100-200MB  for an imageless version.
