Outpost liaison goes berserk
« on: October 30, 2007, 02:38:00 pm »

First caravan arrives, I get ready to trade my platinum crafts (it's the only ore I've found... lucky me), and someone comes to the door.  I accidentally left my game running and the caravan was leaving when I came back to the computer, so I didn't get to trade anything.

A few seconds later as the caravan leaves, the liaison goes berserk and starts killing my dwarves.  He's eventually beat down.

So... did the liaison just get really cranky that I didn't get around to trading anything with him, or is this overreaction a bug of some kind?  It said he was leaving unhappy, but I get the impression his happiness level went down a little too far.

If this is normal, that's a fun surprise.  If not, I thought I'd post it here.   ;)

the liason that came with the 1st bunch of dwarf traders stuck around until well.. mid winter..

presumably because I toggled the trading thing a few times.. the trader left.. leaving the liason behind.. it doesn't conduct meeting until the broker isn't actually trading

now it's mid winter and he just started asking my manager/broker (4 posts!) what we want.

incidentally he's also been running around following the broker.

-
now it's spring.. and he's still there whilst my broker cum manager/etc is updating his records... and well.. is now great at paper work.. think i'll turn that bit off and see what happens...

...he drops his books and conduct a meeting.. unfortunately.. beforet the meeting starts.. he legs it off to sleep.. think i'll separate the roles and see what happens.

Liaison gone berzerk here too. Stuck around in the fortress two levels below ground and now he's gone potty. I hadn't build a trading post so the caravan left pretty quickly.

As far as I can tell, it's the expedition leader that meets with the liaison.

Bump for Toady in case he didn't see it, and it's actually a bug.

If not, disregard.

well.. eventually they held the meeting.. and left.

funny thing was that he left just as the elves entered... bring their wood crafts whilst scoffing at my wood and bone stuff.

I noticed that if the traders are at your depot.. and you turn trade -> no trade.. they leg it.

Guess the next game I'll split the noble jobs right at the start.

The problem just seems to be that meeting with the outpost liaison is a very low-priority job, and if the noble attached to them decides they have better things to do, they'll put off the meeting forever until the liaison goes batty. I've watched as my expedition leader trekked around doing everything from mining out bedrooms to building bridges to farming to paperwork and not spare more than a moment or two between tasks to breathe more than a word to the poor liaison following him, already half way through the meeting but stretching it out months by a refusal to finish it. Turning off other tasks caused him to complete the meeting so the outpost liaison could leave.

In my scenario, the liaison was met with and prices were set in both directions.  Then I went AFK before I could trade anything to the caravan, the caravan packed up and started to leave, the Liaison got unhappy and then went berserk and killed two kittens and mortally wounded a dwarf before he was finally beat down by the remaining six.

I've had this happen 2 of 2 times. the caravan comes, I turn off the leader's jobs so he has the meeting, the meeting finishes successfully, I send the leader up to the depot to trade, wait another month or so, then I get "A diplomat has left unhappy" when the caravan leaves. the liaison doesn't leave with them. the first time he went melancholy, the second time he went crazy and ran around naked.

edit: and the next year's caravan didn't bring the stuff I requested. I wanted cows and gems, and they didn't bring any.

This was happening for me until I disabled all of my expedition leader/broker/everything else noble guy's jobs. After I did that, he finished his hauling task then immediately went to his office and conducted the meeting.

Or apparently the initial problem was happening for me, didn't experience the liason hanging around too long and getting grumpy.

So far I've made only "test" forts, so I've met the liaison only twice. Of those two times, once it all went smooth - the guy packed up and left before the caravan. The other time, my fort leader was a miner. (He was a freaking LEGENDARY MINER by the time the liaison showed up - all because of digging through the sand. I think that's a bug.) The liaison stupidly followed him around as he happily chucked away at sandstone, making a trench to the aquifer. And sure enough, at one of the sharper turns, the miner happily chucked away the floor beneath the liaison. He drowned in the aquifer and was poisoning the air around that place for quite some time.

First caravan on this new fort went fine, but I did trade a few things that the liaison bargained for.  Maybe that made him happier.

I just experienced this as well. The trader and liaison came and I had the meetings with the liaison (selected requests, and then later confirmed contract, are there more?) He then went back to the trade depot and sat there until winter. At some point later he went berserk. At the same time one of the merchants went melencholy and two of his mules went stark raving mad.

Pathing bug till they got thirsty/hungry enough?

Bump, This issue still needs attention.

Also, the 3 or 4 times it's happened to me i've noticed it's in an area up or down some stairs.
