How Dwarf Fortress Helped (!?) Me on Exams...
« on: December 15, 2010, 03:12:26 am »

My dwarf fortress addiction hobby actually helped me in my university-level earth and ocean sciences exam last term. I went into the exam drastically under-prepared, and was faced with questions like these:

-This reddish aluminum-rich mineral has a high melting point.
My answer: BAUXITE
-name three common ores of iron:
My answer: MAGNETITE, LIMONITE, HEMATITE
-The minerals Granite and Diorite are sedementary, igneous, or metamorphic?
My answer: IGNEOUS.
etc.

I winged the exam. I got 87%. I'm not kidding.

I <3 Dwarf Fortress.

It's fantastic. the average was 57%. I came off as really knowledgeable to all my friends...

... who all thought i was a little crazy when I described microcline as my least favourite rock.

"you have a least favourite rock? ....why?"
"it's the same colour as ada- uh. It's.... just ugly."

Did you go on to explain the importance of flux stones?  :P
I realy like that Toady took the time to use real world geology. I'm sure once day, if he gets around to upping the world gen algorithems, then it will mimic the formation of mineral veins and batholiths and such.

I like that word. Batholith. It's so dwarfy.

It helped me a bit later in a Greek History exam when I knew that bronze was an alloy of tin and copper, or with bismuth.

I really should have known that anyways, though.

I learned that when playing RuneScape :/

Believe it or not WoW teaches you that too.  Low level mining lets you take a bar of tin and a bar of copper to make bronze.  At higher levels you can take a bar of iron and a lump of coal to make steel...

I have yet to take a class about the different ways to kill elves. I've counted at least 6.
If only Toady made a game that would let me learn physics and trig...
Get on it!! :P

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

I've linked this page to quite a few places now. This is one of the most brilliant examples of Dwarf Fortress and Toady's greatness. </end asskiss>

I have arranged corpses to form calculus homework answers.

It was great because the different colors allowed me to use the same letter for more than one variable.
