Dwarf Fortress Reference in Blue Planet Backstory
« on: December 14, 2010, 09:25:13 pm »

From: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70168.0

"In the mainstream, the colonies developed very advanced models to predict societal development and to maximize their productivity. There are rumours that these simulations were based on a 21st century program that simulated dwarves living in fortresses; however, these are only unsubstantiated rumours, no more. Regardless of their origins, these models were very accurate and effective, and some claim that they formed a significant backbone to the models used by Ubuntu to guide the development of the society and economy throughout the Sol system."

Just thought I'd mention it here.  BTW the FreeSpace 2 Mod 'Blue Planet' is amazing...

"Nobody wants to live in Townbrush, and for good reason. Almost everyone that has come to Townbrush has been eaten, stabbed, crushed, drowned, hacked, incinerated, or beaten to death with an octopre skin backpack. When we're not under siege, we're being attacked by Forgotten Beasts. And when we're not being attacked by Forgotten Beasts, there's probably a zombie whale crushing someone to death in the dining room."

Basically Earth is nearly destroyed by isolation from the rest of the universe.  So this group of 'Seers' plays dwarf fortress to decide on how to fix things...

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

I'm always logged in. Except when I'm in class. Then I need to take a few seconds to do that before browsing.
