Not enough haulers!
« on: December 14, 2010, 05:28:44 pm »

(First post, whoo whoo!)

So I've got a bustling fort of 117 dwarves and I have a HUGE lakebed I'm digging (inspired by Undergrotto, though not nearly as massive or awesome as it), and I've been working on it for a good two years.  It's almost dug out, but the problem is that in those two years I've managed to clear about 10% of the stone into dumps nearby.  My dwarves are too danged busy doin' other stuff (slaughtering dozens of animals, since I had a dog explosion, bonecrafting, masonry, large metallurgy industry, picking up after ambushes [no sieges yet, but it's a different story and I think I know why], etc).

Anyways, is there some kinda fancy trick that ya'll have for making sure yer hauling gets done?  Right now I have about 5 designated Garbagesmiths (as I call them), and everyone else, when not performing some labor or other, hauls.  I wanna get my LAKE OF DOOM finished before the FPS crashes TOO much (right now it's sitting near 30)!

Thanks!  ;D

Create a tiny 1x1 meeting zone. Have as many idle dwarves as possible for about a year or so.

In about 12 years you should get a huge bumper crop of haulers, and additional haulers each year afterwards.

but carefull those dwarfes tend to bond up very heavy so if you lose more than 2 dwarfes at once for whatever reason you might end up on the receiving end of an evil tantrum spiral :)

another way is to specialise crafters and haulers ..

so disable hauling for crafter and select groups of haulers for the specific job (refuse for those dumping jobs, stone for filling metal ore and stone piles and so on)

anyway the master recipe is ..dont do too much the same time .. that splits your workforce far too much to be usefull .. it heklps to forbid parts of the to be hauled stuff until one area is cleared .. and to speed up hauls between or from craftshops(butcher) design your fort so that specific stockpiles are very near (like refuse and food pile near the butcher or wood and furniture pile near the carpenter) .. remember that moving z-levels count as 1 step too in case of hauling distance (so piles above or below shops are quite fine when connected via nearby ramp or stair

This would be a long-term plan, but you could speed things up a tad by training your haulers' agility (and perhaps strength, if they're carrying heavy stuff).  There's some !!SCIENCE!! about training attributes at http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010_Talk:Attribute#Testing_attribute_gain_via_skill_use. Spinning unconnected screw pumps isn't mentioned, but that was a highly effective way of buffing up dwarves back in 40d.

You could try making quantum stock piles in the riverbed, therefore making the dumping time shorter.

Though, specializing haulers will probably help a lot. It sounds like the dorfs are only hauling in their spare time.

Thanks for the input, ya'll!

Sounds !!SCIENCE!!y, but I dunno if I have the will for it...  Perhaps one day...

Here's what I'm doing.  I've scaled down my metallurgy operations, enabled hauling on my miners since the lake's almost all dug out (there's still the bottom layer, but I'm gonna get rid of all the stone first), and made a few more Garbagesmiths.  In addition, I've made a quantum stockpile on the causeway.  So I now have about 40% of my dwarves hauling at any given point, so with a few more hours, I should be good!  Next to fill the lake and then put the finishing touches on my arena.  (I wanna put the axe smiley here, but I dunno where to find it.  Whatever.)  *Menacing Axe Emoticon!!1!11!one!*

I can't believe people actually complain about dwarfs with "no job"

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

ALL WORK AND NO IDLING MAKE URIST A NON-DEAD DWARF.

Similarly, all idling/noble and no work makes noble x a magma-drowned dwarf.
