For those who don't know and are using ASCII

EVERYONE WHO IS GETTING RECTANGULAR DWARF FORTRESS (LONGER NORTH AND SOUTH, SHORTER WEST TO EAST)

Look in there, now edit your init to use the curses square

The game comes with a 16x16 font, this will make it squared.

Ryan, I seem to be unable to get into your PC to fix my init file.


I started playing just after the release of .31 and I played with the Mayday tileset till .31.18.
I just wanted to see what the default graphics were like and to be honest I rather like them.

I began playing roguelikes with Nethack when I was 9 years old.  I'm now 27.  I've never had a problem with ASCII...

...until Dwarf Fortress.  Seriously, there's something about the ASCII in Dwarf Fortress that is 10x as chaotic as any roguelike.  I couldn't take it.

And the only graphics packs I like are Phoebus and Ironhand.  All the others I've tried look even more chaotic than the ASCII.

I've only just gotten into dwarf fortress. I have the Phoebus pack. I might go back to ASCII after a while (I've played nethack) but with them all being different I'm not sure I will.

Graphics. I use Mayday because I like having rounded walls more than anything.

I used Mayday graphics pack for my 40d days (about December 2009 till 2010 release) and then used Mayday graphics a little bit then, but switched to ASCII graphics a few months ago. Everything seems so much more readable once you know how everything works.

Don't worry, with a lot of mods out there, they do things to make the game easyer, like giving you rooms to train skills, and then try to balence it out by giving you harder seiges, but few mods go so far as to make things that are [FIRE_IMMUNE][NO_BREATH][BUILDING_DESTROYER:1][FLIER] so a magma flood trap, or spear corrador, or a wall will totaly negate this. I find vanilla to be harder then some popular mods on the market.

I do too, especially Genesis mod. Even though I wipe the walls with Illithids every time they come knocking, those damn hairy goblins always step right over my traps and storm my fortress.

I use Lazy Newb Pack, because that's what I am. I might try ASCII at some point tough. With graphic tileset dwarves fighting goblins who fight humans gets a bit confusing.  Oh, and I grew up on games with graphics.

I started playing because my Game Design class assigned an analysis paper of "a game you've never played before", and chose not to use graphics mods because I was writing about the game Toady made, not about the graphics mods Urist McForumgoer made.

So I got used to the ASCII interface. I did use the init file to change terrain into periods, though.

You're right.  What we're missing is a poll about multi-threading and another about open sourcing.
