Vegetable Oil?
« on: December 14, 2010, 04:15:48 am »

As long as we can heat it up and pour it over the walls. The best part is DF is totally capable of that. A hot-oil trap would be awesome.

Mmm, deep fried goblin...

Of course, why use vegetable oil when you can use magma: 100% less fat!

It also means that elves actually have soap now. Granted, I'm not sure they'd use it.

Now all we need is a cooking revamp, and we'll have dwarves deep-frying bread with cat brains in them, and sauteeing sugar.

Yeah, I was thinking that with vegetable oil now there will be sort of pre-set meals to be made. (bread for example, which could be mixed with other things to make sandwiches, etc.)

Also, now that there will be eggs, there will be chicken, the tastiest thing besides turkey.

Maybe it's just another way to make soap, maybe it will be usable in traps.

I hope that it's a first step thoward a toches/lighting system. Maybe enlighted rooms reduce cave adaptation? I know it's probably just fantasy jerking, but maybe...

Turkeys lay eggs too. :D

I just want to be the mad egger in Adventure mode. I will use nothing but eggs to throw at people. It will be fun.

What vegetable will the oil come from?

uhh... vegetable.. veggies..

That brings up a good point, all we know about the plants are that they're "plants" not if they're fruits, veggies, or what (as far as I know). Will there be new plants? seasonal above-ground plants???

DID YOU KNOW:

Roman bathing houses did not actually feature soap. Insead, you would slather yourself with vegetable oil, then scrape it (and the dirt) off.

So when I read that veggie oil would allow the elves to have soap, I imagined that rather than making soap from veggie oil. ;D

Elven bath houses make too much sense! They could be the at the centre of the elven retreats. Elven lords and ladies giving you missions to kill those hostile to them whilst lazing near a pool is a really nice concept...

I personally see elves as the sort of nature-people type who really don't care about being a little musty or smelling like they've been out in the woods all day (because that's what they do). That being said, they'd still have use for vegetable oils, even if not for soap.

I could suggest other uses for veggie oil, but Dwarves use spores...

Now, if we could just get vinegar, we could have a dressing for that raw Plump Helmet and Longland Grass plate Urist has been trying to get people to eat.  Or a marinade for elven traders...

It occurs to me that above-grounders largely get their plant-based food from wheat-equivalents (Do they even use the wheats?) and berries right now. Do you suppose they'll appreciate vegetables being added? Probably preferable to a primarily-berry diet, at least.

Also, given we've got eggs and wool coming too, do you suppose civilization's farms will start including an animal industry at some point in the near future? Or will the related animals just loiter in towns?

Also Also, finally, a reason to embark on areas with lots of clay.

I laughed at some of the suggestions for vegetable oil and chicken eggs in this post.

I'm certainly look forward to seeing domestic animals. I wonder if this release will include doing something to plants in adventure mode other than ">Adventurer: Burn it. Burn it all!". That would be great but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Wait, I just read the devlog again. SIXTEEN domestic animals? That's a lot...
