So I'm thinking of watching Dr. Who

should I watch from the very beginning (the 1963 version) or should I just watch the newer (2005) version?

Well, the first few seasons are missing a few video entries, but they all still have audio. I've only ever watched Dr. Who casually, so I couldn't tell you if it is worth it.

I've only watched the 2005+ version so I couldn't say if the earlier Dr. Who shows were any good by today's standards. I might try watching them on Netflix if I had the time.

only bother watching the newer seasons

Dr. Who has become a giant clusterfuck of continuity so it's best to just start with the seasons that came the closest to saying "fuck it" and tried to do something new and fresh and with modern concepts like "production values", "good writing", and "special effects budget"

there's nothing in them that isn't either explained or a quick Google won't fix

The old shows are good but there is a major difference between new and old. My advice is to try both and continue watching either one both or neither depending upon which you like.

Don't forget "actors".

Yeah, the new ones are a lot better, and there's virtually zero continuity between it and the old one anyway.

This. I prefer the older ones, but more because I prefer the older British way of handling melodramas to the newer way. The pacing is a lot slower.

Yeah, the old ones could be three times as long as one of the new ones.

Nah, I think it's the Master. His avatar looks too evil to be the Doctor.

The thing I couldn't understand about most of the old ones I've tried to watch on netflix was the audio quality. I could never understand what they were saying.

And the visuals did there part to confuse me as much as possible as well.

Of course, this was the 80s who, I don't know about the other eras.

I demand more info.

OT: I've watched a bit of the earlier episodes and most of the revamped series, and i have to say i prefer the new ones. As well as the stuff mentioned above they also have better soundtracks. I prefer the latest season. I think those have the best concentrations of stories. The took the guy who made  some of the awesome episodes and put him in charge.

"It was the 80's" sums up everything pretty much, including the audio. I think I'm just a hardcore nostaligic, while fuzzy audio is annoying, as is the blurriness ect.... it's just so different from the razor sharp precision of today's productions. Sometimes I watch anything new and I spend more time thinking about all the work that went into making the piece so shiny, rather than paying attention to it.

The thing is, I've watched and loved plenty of old TV and movies. The episode of Dr.Who though... I just can't stand not being able to understand what anyone is saying, and thus never having any idea what is going on.
