Is number of migrants night-infinite?
« on: December 13, 2010, 06:58:52 pm »

I often read on this forum, that people kill unskilled immigrants, and just keep valuable ones. Does this mean, that immigrants are always replenished up to about the number attracted by overall fortress wealth? I'm not quite cruel enough to purposely kill migrants (and too ocupied with other things to build a deathtrap), but I do have a tendency of putting "useless" dwarves into my military with makeshift equipment. Goblins managed to fill many coffins, and yet the migrants still come.

Good question. I know Toady was planning to make it so migrants came from somewhere, BUT due to the fact that migrants show up even if your dwarves are the last ine earth, I'm saying that appear at the edge of your map endlessly.

If you are playing a dead civ, you'll only get about four migrants, ever.

Currently, migrants are spawned when they enter the map. They don't "come" from anywhere, they just sort of appear when they show up. The number that come each season is based off a number of factors, primarily your created wealth, your exported wealth, the rate at which you're creating wealth, and the number of dwarves that have died in your fort (more deaths = harder to attract migrants). So yes, migrants are nigh-infinite, and if you're creating lots of wealth very quickly, for instance by forging lots of steel items, you'll get a lot of migrants.

I believe the observation was that the first 2 waves seem to appear out of thin air (you get them even if your civ is dead). These waves could span the normal range based on the wealth you have etc. After that, who you get is drawn from the civilization (or at least, they did in 0.31.13), so a dead civ will stop producing migrants.

A man would see that as a difficult challenge.
An elf would see that and despair.
A dwarf would see that and say, "Bring it on."

They just spawn at the edge of the map. Killing people will reduce the number of migrants you get each year.
