"PC Gaming Is Dead"
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:50:57 pm »

I have a friend who says this to me all the time. :|

It pisses me right off, especially she just shrugs off any PC exclusives I link to her or studies about why keyboard and mouse is just better for 90% of gaming genres (about the only thing that controllers are better for are things like action - ie. console - RPGs and certain platforming games).

Hell, just these exlusives of 2011 convince me PC gaming isn't dead.

I think PC gaming has been pretty much completely abandoned by a lot of major publishers, yep, but that just seems to have made it bloom even more, especially in the independent sectors of the market.

What do all you guys think?

Depends on your point of view really. I wouldn't say it is dead, but there are quite a lot of areas of it that are becoming more console-like instead of valuing what the pc has to offer, compared to a console.

Tell that to the money I spend on Steam.

EDIT:  Also:  Holy balls, is that list for real and not a thing that doesn't exist?  Because these are things that almost look like totally awesome april fools jokes that make me sad they don't exist, and I would never have believed two years ago.  A new AoE?  The rebirth of Transport Tycoon?  More Jagged Alliance yes I know it's rtt and that sucks?  What's essentially Dungeon Keeper 3?  The Sims Medieval, seriously, wtf that sounds BAD ASS?  A new X-Com-alike set in the Cold War?!  Deus Ex 3 and a FPS X-Com please let it not suck?  More Mechwarrior at last?  A new Populous toy that's Bullfrog but not all Molyneux?  Duke Nukem Forever?!!

Yes, a lot of these are old news, but when taken all together, 2011 is going to be the big resurgance of PC gaming.  Records will be set.

Another controversial subject brought up by TTT...

Still glad to see you aren't starting up the old PC gaming sucks nowadays argument. While a lot of genres PC gaming embraced in the past aren't doing so well, and many games suffer from bad ports from consoles or just being dumbed down for them. But despite this the indie market is booming, and there are still good PC exclusives as you showed. And not all cross platform games give PC the short end of the stick.

JAGGED ALLIANCE JAGGED ALLIANCE JAGGED ALLIANCE MY MIND WILL BE GUNS FOR MONTHS Oh god please no...if that game comes out...no wait, no danger after all. It's just corporate JA, not the 2113 team's mod.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm all Dx3. If they screw that one up, PC gaming is dead truly.

I'm actually quite nice IRL, but you people have to pay the price for that.

Now stop being distracted by the rudeness, quit your accusations of trollery, and start arguing like real men!

Tell her that Mainstream PC gaming is dead (or at least abandoned bleeding in an alley), but that's been replaced by a huge number of quality indie companies and if she doesn't count that, well, frankly she's an idiot.

This.

Used to be cross platform games were designed for the PC and ported to console but now every cross platform game is designed for ancient console hardware, clunky console interfaces, the younger Xbox generation of drooling COD-tards and is rushed out the door with very poor optimization.

Also, I think many of those PC exclusives listed wouldn't do very well with an Xbox controller, which is probably why they're PC exclusive.

God I am looking forwards to the World of Darkness MMO.  As far as I'm concerned, being nine feet tall with claws, shredding Pentex goons and not doing afraid of anything can't come soon enough.

Have they confirmed we'll be able to wolf out?

Man, I'd love to play a mage or a werewolf. I hope they will include the fae and the ghost-things-I-forgot-the-name.

Ghost things?

Tough to say what you mean as there are Ghosts. Then there are those Golem creatures (whos name escapes me)

I am not looking very forward to the WoD MMO... I don't expect Mages to be done well.

This is a MMORPG you're talking about right?  I mean, you really think there'll be any of that stuff in an MMORPG?

Looking forward to many of those on the list already. Strategy games are getting a lot of love, though. I won't be able to buy as much as I would like too, alas, given all that's coming out. Magna Mundi will hopefully be Fun enough to keep me occupied.
Wait, Guild Wars 2 comes out next year?
OH MY GOD TRIBES 2 REMAKE
TRANSPORT TYCOON REMAKE
JAGGED ALLIANCE
...
Age of Chivalry game?!
I don't appreciate Crysis 2 because I won't be able to play Mechwarrior: Living Legends on it.
Dust still looks spectacular.
Kings and Castles looks neat.
Great. A Warhammer 40k MMO in 2012. This is how the world will end, or it will end when Crusader Kings finally gets a sequel.
