PC gaming survived the best game in the universe. There's nothing that can kill it now.

PC gaming survived the best game in the universe. There's nothing that can kill it now.

Sure there is: Increasing costs of production with diminishing returns on investment. You can only make games so much more accessible until the well runs dry and the industry either realizes it has to cut costs somewhere, or crashes horribly, or both. The commercial gaming industry as it stands today (your typical "AAA" games) does not seem like it's going to last another decade.

Sounds a bit unrealistic considering the selling rates of today, even with the production costs. Plus there will aways be people making games for the PC, given how much easier it is for indie devs.

@G-Flex:
You're saying that as if AAA crashing is a bad thing. Most if not all AAAs there are right now on the PC are console ports. Fuck those. I'd much rather keep our middle investment games.

@Dakk:
You mean the constantly falling PC games sale rates? The PC market shares less than 15% of the video game market last I checked.

Hell, just these exlusives of 2011 convince me PC gaming isn't dead.

I was going to go, 'oh hell, that must be full of modern crap like Fallout 3'.. but then, damn, even if most of the good stuff are just remakes, those are remakes of some amazing games. I tried to hate and be cynical on the DOTA 2 and the Tropico 4 and the Stronghold 3 and JA2 remake, but my heart just melted on seeing Magna Mundi and many of the following ones.

I've said it tons of times, though. Games like DF will keep me from buying a console. Console games are too shallow, IMO, and I'm glad that the semi-casual games and button mashers are moving to console. Don't even put Facebook games under the same category as browser games. Facebook games are their own genre of grinding, microtransactions, and spamming your friends.

I, for one, will be forever happy with the strategy games, true roleplaying games, and indie game prototypes on the PC.

I saw that list and quite honestly I was shocked by how many sequels and remakes there are, even though those are good games.

It's really a shame companies won't really strike out on their own so much anymore.

My problem isn't necessarily with sequels. Many great games have been made that demand sequels.

The problem for me is the nature of sequels. Sometimes it seems like developers lose sight of the fact that content is king, and they'll deliver you a sequel that is mostly the old game, with a few, occasionally forgettable, improvements.

Lots of times when I want to play a sequel, I want to play more of what I enjoyed. That doesn't mean I want to play exactly what I enjoyed in the past. I think sometimes what I want is less a sequel and more just a really kick-ass expansion. When devs call it an expansion, it usually delivers within expectations. When it's a sequel...the odds it's going to either be a different game, or a half-assed attempt at a sequel, are too good.

This is true, but when the overwhelming majority of games are sequels I think it'd be time for some fresh blood.

I'm looking forward to the day PC gaming finally dies though. Seeing seemingly invincible a$$holes fall down into the gutter always makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside and killing off PC gaming is one step forward to killing EA and Ubisoft. Hell, maybe if the market crashes hard enough we could get people to lynch them?

Possibly, but a fair portion of those games are new. Things like Cargo! and Introversion really interest me. And if Introversion is anywhere near as good as it seems to be reviewed, I know to expect a sequel.

It's Subversion. Easy mistake to make given their name. :P

Out of all the games on there, I'd say Subversion is easily the most dynamic and promising. (But possibly also the least certain to ever finish.)

I predict Subversion to end up like Elemental: over-hyped, rushed out the door and in the end nothing but a cash scam. With the expectations people seem to have of it, sooner or later the guys running Introversion are going to give in to the lure of money and pressure the rest of the developers to "speed up production"...

Based on Introversion's history, the studio may not even stay open long enough to finish it. I think calling it a "cash scam" is pretty cynical though. At its worst, I don't think of Elemental as a cash scam. May not be a great game, but it's sole intent in being developed wasn't to make money. I think that's even clearer with Subversion. Who the hell puts that kind of time into procedural city generation just to make a buck?

I'm not saying the game will live up to expectations....but since when is failing to meet fan expectations automatically mean developers were deceiving them?

It may not've been for the money initially, but once they saw just how big a hype they're generating, the idea of releasing a "shortened version" must've crossed their minds more then once. Plus, failing to live up to your own promises or delivering a game that 'doesn't work adequately isn't just deceiving your customer, it's ripping them off en masse and it's always done on purpose, because you can't tell anyone with a straight face that someone accidentally forgot half of the game features.
Imagine a company selling cars that lack back seats and lose their left front wheel if a guy named John tries to drive it. That company wouldn't be in business for long after that, yet people accept the same thing from game developers without batting an eye.
Anyway, I predict that many of the games on that list are going to lack core components that their developers have been speaking about since the conception. And I don't mean a character here or there, but the very essence of what's supposed to make a game awesome will be missing. That's why PC gaming is going to be dead before the turn of the decade.
