Migrant skill savescum. Possible?
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:21:44 pm »

So is it possible to predict when you get a migrant wave and save right before it? If so can you reload to the point before you got it until you get a group you like?

you can always save every, say, 5-10 in-game days, forcequit and reload when you get a wave. with such a short amount of time to wait it shouldn't be too unbearable, and you can try to get a save closer while you wait.

Its more possible to savescum artifacts. Save a few days after the mooded dwarfs starts working, then you can restore for different artifacts.

I've already done that! Just keep in mind that the ingredients won't be changed (of course), nor the name, so if you are stuck with something awesome but whose name translate into "Boilingbowels the Damp Suffering", you'll have to stick with it.

Good luck getting 20 random migrants that don't include at least one fish dissector, wood crafter, bowyer or animal carer...

Well those are a given, but a wave of 19 useless dwarves with, say, a legendary weaponsmith may be worth keeping. 'sides, just atom smash the useless and give the masons some work by churning out monuments.

What's useless about a bowyer? I mean, unless you plan on melee-ing with crossbows, aren't high quality wooden bows just as good as high quality metal ones?

Yeah but .... using wood for weapons? How un-dwarfy can you get?

Using wood for furniture.

Wooden weapons can still kill things just fine, and that's all that matters.

Bowyers are good for one thing - smelting duty! ha ha.  I'd let them dabble in weaponsmithing so they could create a real dwarven weapon just once in their lives, but it doesn't help when they go moody.  That's when they get a military squad assigned to guard them, because they will go mad.  No artifact bows for you, Urist McSmelter.

I'm a dirty savescummer, I confess. Just now I crashed it because I got an adamantine crossbow artifact. UGH.

It did have the goddess of wealth looking victorious on it though. Relevant.

Why pass that up? Assign it to a member of the guard, so they can shoot up real threats, but when they administer punishment they might as well be swinging a squeaky toy.

Well using wood does piss off elves: dwarven....

However, I still can't get marksdwarves to do crap in this version: not train and certainly not fight.

wouldn't they just shoot the offending dwarf through the head?

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
