What's useless about a bowyer? I mean, unless you plan on melee-ing with crossbows, aren't high quality wooden bows just as good as high quality metal ones?

Unless you''re in skeleton infested territory, bone is a not-so-easily-renewable resource and so too is wood. Having a skilled bowyer come as a migrant saves a lot of wood/bone to train one up if you wanted crossbow spamming. Mind, I can just as easily see a weaponsmith make the crossbows anyway.
