Superdwarves still "gain experience"
« on: December 07, 2006, 04:33:00 pm »

I've got two miners who have all their stats maxed out (superdwarvenly tough, perfectly agile, ultra-mighty).  But they still generate "more experienced" messages.

I belive that the experience messages are generated when the dwarf gains a new level in a skill, not an attribute. Although I could be wrong. However I do have some fortress guard recruits that recently became novice wrestlers, no attribute gain...

<checking>...

I do have several novice wrestlers with no attributes and I did get "gains experience" messages when they get the rating.

That's odd.  The message is linked to gaining a "level", which increases your attributes if possible.

Your "level" currently controls your counterstrike chances and your chance to be surprised by charges, so it's still meaningful even after the stats have maxed out, though the message is hardly important to begin with, especially as they become more powerful.

Nope, I've watched it closely.  It only corresponds to attribute gains.  There's a formula that goes along with attribute gains, 250*x*(x+7), according to a poster on the wiki, and it looks like the game is posting announcements when x = 16, x = 17, etc. is reached, even though no further attributes can be gained.

Edit after seeing Toady's reply: no surprise, then: it's announcing reaching levels 16+, once no more attributes can be gained.  Interesting to hear that leveling has an influence on something more than just attributes.  It sounds like supersuperdwarves should be better in combat against weapon lords, then.

Oh, that brings up a second bug: fighters (in Adventure Mode, anyway) don't gain experience for attacks, only for counterattacks.  If that holds true for Dwarf Mode as well, then "high-level" dwarves probably gain weapon skill far faster, being far better at counterstrikes.

Yes they do, I just tested that.

They don't, however, gain experience for fighting prone enemies, nor can thrown weapons seemingly hit prone enemies, leaving me wondering just what incentive there is for ever finishing someone off vs leaving behind you a map full of cripples.

I've just noticed that if you have a maxed attribute in adventure mode (possibly dwarf mode as well, but it's hard to be sure), there is a possibility that your newly earned attribute points will be assigned to the maxed-out stat (to no effect) instead of to a stat that you can still increase.  My most recent adventure mode character got Ultra-Mighty as his 6th increase, and skipped his 8th increase.

I've had that problem in dwarf mode too. My very strong perfectly agile siege operator has been gaining attributes like mad, and got something like three message in a row while staying at those attribue. I've gotten another 3 or so since then and managed to get "tough" with one of them, but not much else.

I don't really care with that one, since his stats are already nearly perfect as far as I'm concerned, but it's quite annoying when other, lesser dwarves miss out on an attribute.

Some of the aspects of the attributes don't max out at 5 levels, like damage from strength.  I just ran out of words for the time being.

I think a solution here would be to start with crappier attributes, (as far as the names go) or more in between. But I can't see that much room to breath past terms like *Superdwarvenly* or *Ultra-Mighty* without getting ridiculous.

Finding in betweens might be difficult, (what is between very strong and extremely strong?)
but if you had starting attributes start lower, (i.e.; pathetically weak, weak, etc.) you'd have more room to grow. Though with a rating like pathetically weak, you'd have to be weaker than the current no signifier or it would seem strange. (Pathetically weak person moving around in iron armor?)

Well, it is a bit weird that inexperienced dwarves all start with the same attributes. They should be randomized a bit, and having lower than normal attributes would help with that. For example, one dwarf might be "moderately strong" but "somewhat slow" to balance it out.

I'm not sure what the future of this current attribute system is.  I'd really prefer attributes that grow slowly with use since it fits in with everything else.

You could put "outstandingly" and/or "amazingly" in the list as well.
