Crazy Semi-Molten Rock Spire [0.31.18]
« on: December 13, 2010, 04:05:09 pm »

Howdy all,

First time posting, but thought I'd share something utterly incredible that has just occurred on my first embark.  I've heard tales of adamantium spires hundreds of Z-levels tall, which lead to the death of all dwarves out of apathy.  However, I think I've just discovered something a lot more "fun".

Specifically, my embark site has a gigantic spire of semi-molten rock sticking hundreds of Z-levels into the sky (I've not found the top yet), spewing magma into the world.  I've linked pictures at Z-levels 1 and 200 below (after only a few seconds of play, all at an absolute crawl, that's how fast the magma is spreading).

Has anyone ever seen this kind of thing before?  While there is far too much lag for me to play this fortress properly, I'm considering playing a few game months to see if there's some way to save my brave colonists from fiery death through some kind of levy system.

Anyone have any ideas?

Embarks are getting freaky and amazingly dwarfy recently.
Can't really answer you, but yes, please try and do something out of it!

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

Wasn't there something like this posted a few weeks ago?

I've been unable to find anyone else with quite this embark (at least based on my searches here and on google for "magma spire").  However, I've seen a thread from someone else who managed to embark into what was basically just a magma sea.

One guy had a crazy tall spire of SMR and it produces so many red 7s that he gave up several hours later with dwarves that were still not on fire.

The world generator sometimes totally misplaces stuff that should be deep underground. Oh well.

Someone in the 'What's going on in your fort' thread posted about having a pair of magma blobs floating in the sky above their embark point. This very much reminds me of that, in all its awesome glory. It's a shame I know my computer would die if I tried to make it run this, otherwise I'd ask for the save - free magma = free fun!

aw, I never get anything this fun. I just keep getting regular generic sites that get boring once I stabilize the food and drink issues.

honestly, that was a ragequit moment.  The friggin thief just walked on past and grabbed it.  There were like 100+ floors yet to be placed.
My computer struggled to load all the demons.  Then, next frame, I check the unit list....
The last.... 4+ pages.... all demons.

In my fort ive got trees growing on SMR.
though the SMR stops in half way through the deepest cavern.

it also says i can build a farm on top of it.
the tile says 'muddy magma flow'.

also random cavern collapsing.

also the magma should be gone and back to a more normal level half way through year 2.
