Erratic fps drops - why?
« on: December 13, 2010, 01:54:44 am »

In my current fort I'm getting sudden, unpredictable fps drops all the time. As far as I can tell it has nothing to do with water freezing/ice melting - it happens way more frequently than that - and I haven't hit any HFS or even caverns. The game will be chugging along smoothly at 80 fps or so, and then it will just freeze for no apparent reason for a couple seconds. Task Manager shows no change in DF's processor usage during these bouts of fail, but no other program is affected.

Oh, and I did not have this problem in my previous fort, which was also .18, but in another world. Any ideas about what might be wrong? Is it just a worldgen quirk, or have I got a REALLY specific virus?

I read "erotic fps drop". I was disappointed.

Also, check your ram usage.

I would guess this is because DF's processor usage is maxing out a core, so can't actually go any higher.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

A few people apparently have this problem, and from what I remember, it just depends on the embark. You might have to reembark to make it stop.

I have the same problem, but I can see an increase in cpu usage when the spikes come, from 90%-ish to 103%. the RAM usage was stable, I think it was around 30%, but I didn't really look at it.

Yes, I have a ghost. Can they cause that?

I had an FPS drop when I first experienced ghosts. Many ghosts, at that. Of course it may be irrelevant, but it definitely only affects some embarks. My other guess would be some strangeness with liquids deep below.

Plug-in an external hard-drive. Worked for me. Don't know why. ::)

Is your internal hard-drive low on space?

I can also report that having ghosts moving through many layers of rock made my FPS crazy. I suspect it may have been because they moved through unexplored areas, which among other things caused them to fall off of my units list- dwarves with a relationship with them still had it though, which allowed me to zoom to them in unexplored parts of the caverns and THE DEEP.

Memorializing the fallen fixed my problem, which is how I confirmed the issues were related to the spooky stuff.
