Fortress has ground to a halt (FPS)
« on: December 12, 2010, 08:17:55 pm »

I have a 31.18 fortress a couple of years old, and recently I noticed the game stuttering as the framerate dropped briefly to 0 and then recovered. These slowdowns seemed to be connected to the appearance of a [~N] whose body was way out near the edge of the map, but since I had fortress protection to complete I ignored it. Then everything stopped. The game responds normally when paused on the initial load, but is almost frozen once unpaused.

Should I leave the game running while I'm in bed so that the body can be dealt with (if that's the thing causing the problem), or is there something I can do? Has anyone else had this problem? I have an autobackup, but it'll be a lot of work on my end lost if I have to go back to it.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

We might have discovered a new kind of vengeful haunt: one that strikes against the very player herself by freezing time and destroying fps.

I don't even know if hacking tools can get rid of the haunt. It might be worth a shot nonetheless.

I found a more recent save, and while it's had a few stutters around summer / autumn it's gone fine. Differences between the save in the OP and the running one are:

:atomsmashing some claimed clothes off dead dwarves that can't be stored but still generate spam when forbidden and with the fortress cut off from the outside world. I doubt that a dozen sock-hungry dwarves could have been the cause.
:not building several huge bridges in lieu of a constructed roof. Possible cause, will see if cancelling the jobs on that save helps.
:dealing with Casper.

Other than that I've just been twiddling my thumbs until autosave time comes round again. Since saving also saves whatever the cause of the slowdown is, I don't want to do that.
