Yeah the mountains were a bitch but I thought the MAKO with the geth was awesome. You knock them around, land on the, pump them full of lead, blow em up, it really felt like you were in a tank, or at least I felt that way.

I also liked the multitude of equipment. It didn't feel particularly like micromanagement because you only have to worry about 6 people, and if they don't use shotguns you don't give them shotguns. Simple. ME2 added ammo (which was explained away in the first game and then retconned and the reason they gave was crap. What happened to heatsinks?! My guns could kill get just fine a month ago. What the hell happened?!?) and made the game more focused, so focused, in fact, that there wasn't very much exploring. The things hidden were plainly hidden, your arsenal was downgraded, vastly so to the point of using only two different guns all game, and where you did go felt VERY scripted. In the first game I would go out to the ends of the galaxy, scan some asteroids, find an abandoned frigate, and find out it was filled with horrible experiments, the reaper crisis never weighing on my mind.

Bioshock went down a dark wrong path after the first one. The path of consumerism. They knew they had putty in their hands, how could they exploit it? I hope they lose many fans and customers for this and either rot or learn to make a solid full game that is enjoyed on its merit and not attempt to rely on it's afterthoughts.

Oh, the MAKO was awesome and the barren landscapes were fun and made the inevitable Thorian Creeper/Human Husk/Thresher Maw ambushes all the more thrilling. I just didn't like the steep inclines (realistic though they were) or the 'grass but no vegetation' planets.

I agree. I saw it as blue prints that needed to be fleshed out a bit but there was a lot of potential. Then Bioware fucked us.

I've said it before, in this thread, probably twice, but I still don't understand  "all those weapons" you got in 1. It was a matter of finding that one model that was better than all the rest in every stat and upgrading it when you found a new one just like it. Every pistol felt the same as every other pistol. Once you got Spectre weapons that choice was made for you; just buy those, they're better than everything else. The mod system was okay, but even those were "bonus vs organic" or "bonus vs synthetic". The explosive rounds were fun to put in a sniper rifle for a bit, but you'd still do just as well with one of the above.

ME2's guns were at least distinct. A mantis rifle plays very differently from a viper rifle. 3 adds even more, such that you can probably find SOMETHING that suits your playstyle, even ignoring the odd little gems like the scorpion pistol, graal spike thrower, or talon pistol.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Well it is a shooting RPG. I mean how different is one model of gun to another model if they are the exact same caliber? The differences would be minute. However, that said, I probably would like the differences in if I tried them. I haven't played 3 so I don't know whats out there. It was such a jostle though. You have ME which was completely distinct, or atleast i had never played a game much like it, and turned it into Halo (where you fight aliens and don't afraid of anything), which isn't at all what I was expecting.

Although you're exagerating, it is much more a shooter than it was in ME. ME had some exploration in it, ME3 only has simple mission after mission, you can't explore any cities or places, you're just dropped down, you shoot some, speak some and it's done. No side-quests on the way. Only the Citadel offers some of the old experience(in a small way).

I would contest the assertion that all of the Mass Effect I guns behaved the same way. A lot of the modifications added a lot of character to the guns. That is to say, it was the modifications that made the guns unique, not the guns themselves. The cooling/damage ratio was highly variable depending on the mods you used. I remember fond memories of getting a assault rifle that could fire forever, and sticking hammerhead rounds on my shotgun and watching my enemies fly across the room. The different effects the guns had on killing enemies was also pretty entertaining to watch, such as burning up or freezing. The guns, and to a lesser degree, the armor, lacked variety visually, but there was always plenty of ways that they could be customized. There were plenty of ways in which this could be improved in ME with the addition of more gun models and perhaps visual recognition of weapon and armor upgrades when they were equipped, but the way ME2 handled it was the exact wrong way IMO. It took away a large section of player customization, and relegated the ammo types to abilities for some reason. Many of the remaining gun and armor choices in the game were reserved for preorder/dlc nonsense, which doesn't do any favors to the argument of ME2 weapons or armor being more distinct.

On the subject of Mass Effect 3, I feel sorry for people who romanced Jacob or recruited Morinth instead of Samara:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems that Bioware wasn't overly concerned with fleshing out a lot of the less popular avenues, and a lot of characters seem to have been stuck in little more than cameo roles in ME3, much like how Kaiden/Ashley/Liara (pre DLC) were treated in ME2. This seems to extend to a lot of the player choices from previous games, which don't really seem to have much effect towards the plot

I wouldn't necessarily say I was disappointed, considering ME2 was a big let down for me personally, but I expected a little better of Bioware.

Ugh. Yeah I don't think I'll be playing this one, fellas.

If anyone doesn't want to playthrough the game, someone complied all the endings and put them side by side in a youtube video.

If you are colorblind, you won't be able to tell the difference though.

Any FemSheps here who romanced Jacob? I've pretty much always had just one (male) Shep I play over and over again, so. In any case - I liked Jacob's ME3 situation, with the whole trying to be a better father than his was to him and all... until just now, when I found out it's 100% identical if you romanced him in ME2. You barely even get to call him out on it, it seems.

I was satisfied with my Jack romance conclusion (though of course I'd wanted more, yelp), but now I just absolutely love it. Knowing that anyone who romanced Jacob in ME2 just got a punch in the gut and no option to do anything about it is pretty... yeah.

EDIT: And unrelated, but I've sort of got an itch for writing ME3 fanfiction (I've never done fanfiction of any kind before).

Hm... so the consensus of what I hear is 'play them for the game, not for the story', since I've yet to find anyone who is more then grudgingly OK with the ending of the series (or at least the third game), and I generally hear more bad then good about anything but the gameplay of (parts) of the games.

That's too bad, I normally consider Bioware one of the best game makers, so it's sad to see one of their own-universe offerings fall off so badly.

Personally, the story is good until around the end. Can't speak about most romance options though.

I don't know, I thought Neverwinter nights 2 was pretty bad too.
