Why this hate for Origin? o_O

Because it's an inconvenience just to use one program to play just one game and have everything else on steam? Maybe I'm being a tad bit unreasonable though...

i) You can be banned without reason, and EA has a history of banning people over trivial matters.  EA as a whole has an extremely poor customer service reputation
ii) It scans the user's hard drive without any stated limits (i.e. information can be kept and sold), making it effectively spyware
iii) It forces users to waive their right to legal action against EA.  While this likely wouldn't hold up in an extended court cast, it's essentially a confession by EA that they're going to treat their consumers in a way that's borderline illegal and they won't be able to do anything about it without a long, expensive court battle
iv) The reason with the split from Steam was that Steam has rules and regulations about DLC to protect the consumer.  They left specifically because they wanted to do away with these restrictions, meaning that the DLC problem is only going to get worse.

It's a situation where pirates get an inarguably better deal.

I have Steam AND Origin, neither of which I like.

Simple fact of life, everything digital is going to be controlled one way or another. Its a fact of life. Games these days are now requiring you to be online to play them, to sync to websites, to download clients like Steam, and such. Why? Because they need control.

I'd rather be in on the control and know how to bypass it, though.

Oh man. I'm at an actual moral choice that has given me pause. It's been a while since that's happened in my gaming. Spoilers below.

Preparing to head down to the air processing facility on Tuchanka, to release Mordin's cure for the Krogan Genophage mutation - that which was put in place to keep the Krogan population manageable, but has made them near-extinct instead. This would get the Krogans on my side and just feels right to me, especially since Urdnot Wrex is their leader and my bro.

Then the Salarian leader, the Dalatrass, contacted me on comms offering a deal: sabotage the release of the cure quietly, making it seem like the cure just didn't work on it's own merits, and I will have the support of the Salarians fully - scientific support and their entire fleet as well. That would be a huge boon to the construction of the Crucible device and the war effort in general.

 I'm on my way planetside now and the chance to tell everyone about the sabotage (thus blowing it) or keep quiet has appeared, and I'm not sure which I want to choose.

I sided with the Krogans because, well, Wrex. It feels like the 'right' thing to do in my own morals too, even if I know the Salarian fleet and scientists would have been very helpful

Origin isn't that bad.  It is less intrusive than Steam.

I'd also like to mention how much I like the weapon system in 3. I honestly think they got most of the high points about 1 and 2, and combined them effectively. Plus, non-class-limited weaponry options... equals more options, which is awesome.

Haven't gotten far enough with skills yet, but at first glance I approve of that system as well. Esp. since I picked up my Sentinel first, and tech armor + dual-slash omniblade is awesome.

Sadly I skipped ME 1 and 2. Is 3 enjoyable without playing 1 and 2?

Oh god... this is getting hard to play. Everyone is dying. So suddenly, no foreshadowing at all. All my favorite characters are just getting eliminated one after the other. Even people I couldn't even imagine dying.

You could play and enjoy it, but Mass Effect is more of a cinematic video game, if you ask me. The storyline plays a big role, also the past choices have a little effect in 2 and (presumably) more effect in 3. In my opinion that would be like watching The Return of the Jedi without seeing Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope.

I would say you wouldn't understand a single thing in ME3 if you haven't played at least the second installment.

Edit: Hell, I'd say take your time playing the older games because ME3, from what I've played, has quite a few gamebreaking bugs. I've run into at least two uncompleteable quests because of characters that completely disappear even though the map marker says they should be there.

It's particularly problematic because you need to complete all these quests to get a good ending. It's even making me consider putting this game on hold for a few weeks until the patches come out to fix these and whatever headache inducing bugs that might come later.

Fun fact: in order to have a good ending, you either must be a completionist or play the co-op mode.
