Dwarves decomposing while in graves
« on: October 30, 2007, 01:38:00 pm »

One of my dwarves died (cave-in, in case you're interested) and ws promptly buried inside a wooden coffin.

Even though he was buried properly (says "This is the last resting place of...", etc) he decomposed while in the grave, the corpse becoming rotten and sending out misama, and then becoming six bones and a skull.

This wasn't the case in the last version, dwarves in coffins stayed in the state they were buried in.

Intentional change or bug?

Not sure if it's intentional, but it's a little more realistic. I suppose that means we'll actually have to bury the coffins now.

So long as it doesn't produce thoughts of unhappiness (for gameplay reasons due to unburied friends and relatives!) then it's a bit more realistic and adds some depth to corpse management.

It makes sense, if the dwarves don't have embalming. It's easy enough to deal with; just put each coffin in its own room (could be just a 1x1 room if you're cheap, but with the Z axis, there's room for an entire floor dedicated as a crypt/graveyard/catacombs.

Mind-- the graveyard was where you decomposed. Later, you were dug up and your bones were moved to the catacombs to make room for more people to be buried. I expect we could see a similar arrangement in DF, where coffins are stashed in one place and allowed to rot before being moved somewhere else.

This is all provided it's not a bug, of course.

Next time it happens can you check thoughts of dwarves that knew the deceased?

Yeah, they should rot, but the thoughts are interesting here, since there could be a bug if the friends/relatives get upset.  If the dwarf had any.

I haven't seen any unhappy thoughts from this (yet) but I had a dwarf die and he was moved to a coffin, rotted, and then when he was completely rotted away another dwarf came down and removed his bones to place them in the refuse pit.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think corpses in coffins are supposed to emit miasma.  I've slept since the last version (a whopping two times), so maybe my memory's hazy, but I don't recall coffin miasma in the last version.

I'm okay with bodies rotting, but dwarves should be skilled enough to make coffins/tombs airtight so that they do not spread miasma.  I've got 2 mudstone coffins now (I should not have set those guys to hunt without making some crossbow bolts first) and they flooded the area with miasma.

Was looking at my dwarf list and saw one of them was tasked with placing something in a tomb.  "That's odd," I thought.  I still only had the two dead hunters.  Sure enough, the task's building was one of my 2 coffins.  I looked and saw that some of the bones and the skull of a dead dwarf had somehow popped out of the coffin.  The dwarf went down and put them back inside of it.

Toady, this doesn't make much sense to me... dwarves with their craftsmanship should be able to seal the coffins shut so that odors don't spread, shouldn't they?

A third dwarf (administrator who got taken by a fey mood and went insane) buried, rotted, and his bones also popped out of his coffin.  At least my dwarves recognize whose bones they are and rebury them.  I'd feel bad if they dumped them with the rest of the garbage.

On a somewhat related topic, I love that you can simply dump unwanted dwarven bones/bodies now without having them clutter your fortress.
