I did too, but the game didn't care.

You guess so what?  The rule counts and I'm screwed for the first two routes, or I still have a chance to catch one for them?  I'm just trying to play by the books here.

The spirit of the rules seems to be consistent handicaps, so I don't think a one-time increase in difficulty like skipping an early route or two is intended.

Yeah, just wait until you have Pokeballs so that your starter doesn't get all the glory for the first couple routes.

I did, I'm getting my ass kicked by the three-level difference and no running rules.  My treecko won't damn darnit stupid not level long enough for anything to be catchable.

Also, Wally caught a Ralts on his first try.  That bastard.

Well, being able to just run to a Pokemon Center after each battle was both annoying and undermined the whole challenge. The rules about banning either items or Pokemon Centers were both easy to undermine; get a lot of money via Pickup if Pokemon Centers are banned, and repeatedly run to a Pokemon Center if items are banned.

As far as a white-out equaling a Game Over, that is actually more beneficial than just releasing all the Pokemon that used to be in the party. If you think about it, restarting lets you get Pokemon from each route again, as well as retraining your team to overcome the challenge that stopped you. The way I do things, losing your whole party means that you have to get another from your box. If you don't have any more, game over. If you do (sort of unlikely, and you definitely won't have many), then you have to retrain it anyway and then find a way to get more Pokemon without being able to pass the challenge that stopped you. (Unless you level that one Pokemon up high enough to win on it's own, but damn.)
I always took white out as BURN YOUR CARTRIDGE HAHAHA.
Not that I ever did that.
