Conan rose from the bed where he had lain in wait. The sun had not set. This was a strange land indeed. He strode down the steps, eager to begin his newest journey. Before entering the great outdoors, his mother stopped him.Mom: CONAN! Good luck on thy journey! Take these running shoes, you may need them!
CONAN: I do not run.
Mom: Use them for charging or something then. It's rude to wear them indoors though, so remember that.
CONAN: Whatever. I am off to greatness!
CONAN sets forth on his journey, first heading to the Oldale Market, where he buys a couple antidotes, paralyze heals, and some potions.Clerk: You know there's a Pokemon Center right next door, right? Less than a minute away from here? You could fix up your Pokemon for free there.
CONAN: How dare you insult me, vile scum of the Earth? I do not accept handouts. Where I come from, a man
earns his place.
Clerk: Well, it's your choice I guess. It's free for
everyone, though.
CONAN: What manner of trickery is this? Someday, when all your civilization and science are likewise swept away, your kind will pray for a man with a sword. A man should not rely on gadgets and handouts to survive: he should be able to stand alone against the tides of darkness with naught but his and his companions' strength.
Clerk: Just pay up and get out.
CONAN absconds from the Market before heading West into an untamed wilderness.
Route 102
CONAN rushes into the easternmost cluster of bushes, only to find that his redheaded prey is defenseless, and there would be no honor in slaying the pathetic creature. However, he is ambushed by a Ralts who was apparently using the human as bait. The long-haired freak looks like it will run at any moment, so CONAN immediately throws the Ultra Ball that Meroveg recently found, luckily catching it on the first try. Seeing that it is feminine in dress yet has great potential, having challenged the greatest warrior in the land, CONAN names this creature Boudica after a warrior of similar qualities.+
CONAN decides to test Boudica's might against the youngling guarding the path to the south.Youngster Calvin: I guard this path, knave! None may cross without facing me in pitched combat! Have at you!
CONAN: Go forth, Boudica, and slay this pox-ridden whelp!
vs.
Boudica immediately faces off against a Zigzagoon far more powerful than any CONAN has encountered in the wild. The Zigzagoon circles Boudica, growling.CONAN: Boudica! Tackle that mangy dog!
Unbeknownst to CONAN, Boudica does not know how to tackle. Boudica instead teleports wildly around the battlefield, confusing the Zigzagoon while avoiding its attacks.CONAN: Ugh, come back then. You have much to learn. Go, Wulfgar! Show the new recruit how it's done!
vs.
As Wulfgar enters the battlefield, the opposing Zigzagoon cowers, seeing a foe that far overmatches it. It overcomes its fear and leaps into battle, though it knows its doom is nigh. Wulfgar leaps upon it and tears its throat out almost immediately, sending Youngster Calvin running. Wulfgar jumps onto Calvin's back and pins him down.CONAN: Good work, Wulfgar! You, youngling! Money or life? You had best prepare to give one up!
Calvin hands CONAN a wad of cash before sprinting back to Oldale.Bug Catcher Rick battles in the same fashion, though he has two Wurmples. They fall easily before the might of Wulfgar, though Boudica refuses to actually attack, favoring a strategy of endless teleportation. Wulfgar is only slightly injured by the Wurmple, but he attains level 7. CONAN heals him with a potion, and all is well.
Ahead, however, Youngster Allen stands vigil upon a high bluff, waiting for a foe to challenge him.CONAN: Puny child, out of my way! I aim for Petalburg, and you will not stand in my way!
Allen: My Poochyena and Taillow have never been defeated! You won't change that!
CONAN: Bring it, shorty!
CONAN throws out Wulfgar while Allen deploys his Taillow vs.
The Taillow pecks at Wulfgar from above, but Wulfgar's strong jaws break the gutless beast's neck almost immediately afterward. Shocked, Allen sends out his own Poochyena to try to beat the relentless Wulfgar. vs.
CONAN: Good job, Wulfgar! Now just crush this nuisance so we can get out of here!
Wulfgar and the Poochyena charge each other, and crimson blood sprays across the turf. Both look about half dead, but Wulfgar has the upper hand.Allen: Poochyena! Go for the throat and don't let go!
When the two next collide, Wulfgar is caught by the throat, and he feels his lifeblood seeping out at an alarming rate. Regardless of how much he thrashes, his foe does not let up. Before the two had been dealing nigh-equal damage to one another, but this had changed things. Suddenly Wulfgar was losing badly, and there was naught CONAN could do.CONAN: Hang on, Wulfgar! You can make it!
Exhausted and ragged, Wulfgar collapses beneath the other Poochyena. CONAN looks on in horror, and something within him snaps. A look of sheer rage crosses his face as he pulls out a second Pokeball.CONAN: Go, Hrothgar! Slay this blackguard and his mutt.
vs.
Hrothgar emerges from his Pokeball and claws viciously at the Poochyena, slaying it almost instantly.CONAN: There is no choice for you. I shall have both your money
and your life.
vs.
Hrothgar easily catches the fleeing trainer and dispatches him quickly in a frenzy of scratches and pecks.CONAN, though saddened by the loss of Wulfgar, continues on to Petalburg, the land of his father. During this journey, Boudica and Torchic team up to confuse and slay enemies at an alarming rate. Eventually, Boudica masters the art of deception so well that it manifests as a psychic attack. With his three remaining Pokemon, CONAN challenges the final trainer of the route, Lass Tiana.CONAN: Flee for your life! You cannot stop me from reaching Petalburg, she-devil!
Lass Tiana: Who are you? I'm just looking for Pokemon, I'm not stopping you.
CONAN: How dare you try to convince me to retreat! The law of the land says that two trainers who meet upon a battle-plain must fight to the death, and I shall uphold the ancient tradition! Steel thyself, witch!
Boudica, armed with the power of Confusion, easily slays both of Tiana's Zigzagoons. Their growls had no effect on the special attacks that Boudica used. They were weak-willed dogs, easily crushed by Boudica's blasts of mental energy. Tiana surrendered nearly instantly, giving CONAN half of her savings. Having taken his profit from the battle, CONAN strode into Petalburg, ready to meet his long-lost father. First though, he went to the nearby medical center to prepare Wulfgar's body for burial. Though Wulfgar's death was only the first of many, CONAN was always saddened most by the loss of his first true warrior.
