Alright, I was playing a human adventurer when I got a quest to kill a cave dragon. So I trek over there but while trekking through the wilderness I got interrupted with the message "Raw Admantine! Praise the miners" and then "You have discovered a great magma sea". But seeing as it was night and I couldn't see anything I fast travelled away until I reached the lair. When I entered and took a step I slammed into an obstacle and died. Are these two events somehow related?

The creature probably grabbed you and threw you into a wall, since messages sometimes don't appear in the current version.

My guess is that you somehow fell down a magma pipe, revealing the submerged adamantine veins and then dying when you hit the bottom.
