How to make a creature non-frightening
« on: December 11, 2010, 03:38:12 pm »

So, I've started a fortress in a haunted biome, but am having trouble getting much done because my Dorfs are constantly canceling their work on account of "Zombie Hoary Marmot"s wandering too close or "Zombie Mountain Goat"s eyeballing them from the cliffside above. Now, granted, this may be a little terrifying at first but it's kind of holding up my construction projects. Is there a line in the creature Raws that defines if a creature is scary? After a while, you'd think my Dorfs would get the idea the zombie marmots and goats are harmless...

Not in this case, though taking out [CAN_UNDEAD] from the raws should stop them from being zombies/undead, because zombified creatures are hard-coded to frighten dorfs. I get the feeling since you didn't just embark somewhere else, you WANTED zombies, but it's just not a possibility so far as I know.

all creatures scare dwarves. Even groundhogs.

How to make a creature non-frightening: Drop magma on it.

Unless it's immune to magma, in which case it will always be frightening.

Well, I was more interested in a challenging environment. Dangerous creatures. Not undead marmots. :P

Plump helmet men have a particular set of properties which seems to make dwarves unafraid of them, most likely the combination of being benign and blind.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Have you tried adding [NOFEAR] onto your dwarves?

Does that not also mean they won't flee from things that -are- dangerous?

Remove the eyes from your dwarves. No seriously, that works.

That would make much problems... I think.

[BENIGN] makes the creature non-agressive, but the dwarfs will still fear it.

It doesn't really affect anything except target finding for military dwarves. You can remove the eyes until you need the army to kill something, at which point you add the eyes back.

Maybe we can try BENIGN and [VIEWRANGE:1]. I have put viewrange 30 to 40 to some birds.
