A couple bad thoughts are fine, and avoiding bad thoughts entirely simply isn't possible. If my dwarves' moods start getting into the pale yellow and red, then I take notice, but as long as everyone's at least content, I don't bother with it much.

There are no unhappy dwarves. Just thoughtcrime.

If there's no bad thoughts, then how would you know the good ones are good?

Anyway, I'm usually doing my best to keep them from killing each other. But once they're happy enough there are more pressing matters than spending time and resources on them being slightly happier.

15x15 dining hall outfitted with 80 chairs and table of green glass.
152 smoothed bedrooms with green glass cabinets and coffers in each.
Automatic shower unit directly between them, with no way around.

Haven't had an upset dwarf since that moody child demanded shells of a fortress with no surface water.

The only important dwarfs are the First 7,

The rest live in dormitories... except the metalsmiths, they live in 5x5 rooms next to the MAGMA.

Give cats natural metallic armor and throw them in your danger room.  Also allow their mouth and tail to grasp (shield in mouth, weapon in tail xD)  Have a cat based military.  You know, do the same with all tame animals xD send in the cats as shock troops to disrupt the archers

Make the furniture out of gold (which i usually have gratuitous amounts of.  My friend has 154k in his fort  :o) and you can get away with less tables and chairs.  if space is an issue.  or you can just get a fancier room ;P

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

My dwarves are often pissed about something. It's usually an unfortunate accident, or just my general lack of care about what my dwarves think. Screw their dead friends and lovers!

If you want to imagine the future, Urist, imagine a *=+Cave Spider Silk Boot+=* stomping on the face of a dwarf, forever.
