Building a water tower is rough
« on: October 30, 2007, 11:43:00 am »

1. A tile full of water 7/7 where there is an up ramp has no detectable water on the next level up.

2. Dwarves have trouble stepping off ramps in some directions.

3. Dwarves can't step onto a ramp from some directions.

Those 2 are probably only a single thing, but I can't tell which was causing my dwarves to not take a perfectly good passage out of tower.  Perhaps it is simply that removing a wall next to a ramp doesn't properly update the pathing.

4. Dwarves can't build anything while standing on a ramp, but they can tear something down.

5. Dwarves can't build walls on diagonals to where they stand, but they can tear them down.

6. Building behind a ramp gives a negative distance value, instead of saying can't access materials.  Side view building at B

This is intentional. Ramps must be adjacent to a wall for it to be functional. If the wall is removed the ramp can no longer be used. Ramps are a one-direction deal, going to the upper level requires moving into the wall the ramp is next to, from the ramp.

Though, what I think might be an actual bug...
Miners cannot mine a top level if penetrated by ramps below it. They work fine when you tell them to mine around the base of some fresh ramps.

That sort of makes sense with what I saw.  So not a bug.  Have to add another then,

7. Deconstructing a floor drops both the material and the dwarf down.

For item 1 of my first post: I can't get an open space tile 7/7 to push up to where a pump will interact with it in the next floors open space.  The water is just never visible, am I supposed to build a channel in open air?!

8. Deconstructing a wall, and anything else from d-n, up against a 7/7 water does not cause the water to move.  Also applies to deconstructing stuff in the same tile as the water.

I guess it is just not possible to build a water tower in this version.  About the only thing I didn't try was putting the pumps draw point in the open space tile.

I'll look at these -- but in (1) what do you mean be detectable?  Is the downramp not displayed as blue?  It doesn't pump?

I finally figured out the the water is there as it should be all along.  Lack of sleep and glare from a nearby light made it so I couldn't see the dark blue 7 of the water on the first level when viewing the second level.  The pump on the second level still would not pump the water though.  I tried just about every configuration I could imagine and the second floor pump just never worked.
