I've never heard of a cell phone being referred to as an explosive device, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. Besides, how much harm could a cell phone cause if it exploded? If it could explode.

The booth sends out a signal, which would presumably be picked up by an explosive device and then said device would carry out it's primary function (i.e. explode) Some may call it inhumane, but if they were going to blow themselves up anyways, I think it's a win-win situation.

I sincerely hope they're not using a microwave as a detonation device. If they are, it wouldn't matter if you had a cell phone or not. I'm pretty sure standing inside a microwave will kill you, regardless.

Laptop and cell phone batteries, when shorted out, can provide a small explosion. Big enough to tear your leg off if it's in your pocket, though.
