Not at all hard to do, provided you keep your population low.  You can easily convince the dwarves and humans to bring a lot of meat and cheese, more than enough to keep your dwarves fed.  Drink is harder because there seems to be a limit of 4 per each item that traders will bring, although you can survive on water if you have to.  You'll want to be constantly cranking out trade goods, stone crafts most likely unless you have a lot of excess wood or metal.

It helps if you mod in more types of booze.
Twenty types of booze from underground plants, with 4 each each, gives 80 barrels of win per Autumn.

Am I the only one who has no trouble producing enough wealth to be able to buy out five or six caravans by the first Autumn?

I have no trouble, it's just that I usually forget to start my craft production.

It's significantly more difficult to buy out the first caravan if you specifically avoid using rock crafts, prepared meals, serrated discs/spiked balls for trade goods. Not impossible, by any means, but it does take some effort that some people don't care to spend.

I never use anything but rock crafts and on rare occasion, totems.

+Large serrated steel disc+ and your set, its that easy. By Armok I love steel traps, both useful and valuable.

i never bother with stonecrafting.  Even if you avoid traps, is very easy to chop some trees, find a gold vein, and churn out gold goblets.  At least its enough for me, and I tend not to buy too much from the caravans except for raw materials and the occasional cheese or exotic leather.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Done this on my pure glass industry fort, it was pretty easy. The only problem is booze during the winter. Even if you brew all the plants you import, you will probably run out of booze before the elves arrive. A water source is recommended
Also remember you can cook all the seeds. You won't need them anyway.

8 units of food and 16 units of drink per dwarf per year. Assuming you do some brewing with the plants you buy, it should be easy to eke out an existence. Especially if you buy cows, butchery is ludicrously broken.

only butcher the males.  the females produce much food via cheese.

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.
