I've heard there was also a BL novel from the necrons point of view that gave them all personalities, but was terrible because it made them too scheming, much more Egyptian influence then necrons normally have (the amount they normally have being not much) and failing to even mention the C'tan, which is like an imperial book forgetting the emperor. Still possibly paving the way to not awful necron character.

Well Matt Ward wrote that the Necrons overthrew the C'tan.

I'm hoping when the next line of codexes comes along, all of Matt's stuff is retcon'd.

I also read somewhere that a Necron lord had the ability to essentially remove the skin of a human/alien and attempt to disguise themselves as them with the skin. Or maybe that was the deceiver, I forget exactly who/what it was. I have always been fascinated with the Necrons and quite honestly forgot that they are generally without any character.

It makes sense why they don't appear that often. But still, I always saw them as a emotionless, impossible to stop threat that killed everything that moved. And they are terrifying because there is no possible way that you can negotiate or surrender without dying. Although, that might be not as terrifying in the universe where everything wants to kill you, often without a good reason. Now that I think of it, maybe the Tau or possibly the Eldar would be the only races that negotiation might be possible. The humans don't seem to negotiate so much as take advantage of other species and then kill them when it's convenient.

Yeah, of course they're gonna lack character, they're like alien Terminators, made only to kill.

Fall of Damnos had necron lord with "character", which means that they were utterly retarded and got themselves killed in incredibly pointless ways. It also features Immortals getting soundly defeated by villagers with icepicks.

*Was added in DoW: Soulstorm.
You see, I never played Soulstorm because it was a piece of crap and all it really did was add Dark Elves and Red Shirts.

Dark Crusade gave the Necrons just enough character to be a balanced faction, and their lord wasn't a complete pussy.

Dead Men Walking gave a pretty good story about Necrons. They still retained their cool and 'OH GOD MY BODY IS ATOMS' factor after they first appeared. The ending of that book was amazing. I cried tears of awesome.

Is there anything we can really talk about that's actually on topic about Space Marine?

Not really. The game has been under the radar for so long (I saw it first mentioned back when Dawn of War 2 was releasing) that there's very little to go on. And there ain't no way I'm going to the official forums for info.

Last I saw, the official forums for DoWII were pretty much information-deficient. I shudder to think how few hard facts would be floating around those forums for an unreleased game.  :o

Other than that, I think we've already whined about abuse of setting/storyline/etc, and any discussion on combat will end three posts later with "we honestly have no clue whether the combat will be any good, because even their 'combat' dev diary didn't show more than 3 consecutive seconds." So, nope, there's pretty much nothing on-topic to discuss until the next round of media comes out.  :P

Well, this was back when the game was under a different dev house, and it looked like there might be a chance of it coming out before, I dunno, OBL was found. :P

I know, which is why i've gone to the Firestorm Over Kronus mod for DoW: Dark Crusade. Seriously man, check it out. Make sure you got DC fully patched.

Latest version is here, scroll down to "Description" and click on the "read more +" thing, it has installation instructions (including a link to the mod's main site, which has the password you need to be able to unpack the file, though you'll need to register an account there to be able to view the thread)

And i realize it says "Kaurava" not "Kronus" when you load the link, i believe they were working on a Soulstorm version but right now it only works for Dark Crusade.

There been some more of this shown at E3, so I'm reviving this thread. Most interesting is the gameplay videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIqRSiLuFRI&feature=player_embedded and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQXYLTCDPJU&feature=player_embedded.

Still no sign of adeptus mechanicus forces, so I've given up hope for them apart from the titans. It's a shame, skitarii and protectors don't feature very often and it would be nice to see them for once, possibly knights as well (mini one man titans). I was disappointed to see the reload animations being rather small and undramatic, reliance on sync kills means there needs to be a lot of them to avoid boredom. There also seemed to be less ridiculous amounts of blood and less random explosions from earlier versions which is good.

I'm not sure about the health system and lack of parrying/cover, but I appreciate what they are trying to do with it. Not being limited to two weapons is good, though I think 3 might be more reasonable as 40K weapons are rather bulky. Chaos marines aren't too impressive, but neither are they cannon fodder. I'm a bit worried that most seemed to be sporting plasma guns though- most should use the bolter/bolt pistol/chain sword equipment they have in tabletop.

But overall it seems pretty decent, might end up getting it once I have a decent pc and if/when there's a gold edition or something that includes all the chapter choices (don't really care about the golden weapons, but a power sword would be nice).
