There are actual zombies in 40k, of course.

Usually the aftermath of some particularly potent Nurgle plagues.

I suppose that's true. It's just what's behind the Plague Zombies is always far more interesting and horrible.

In my experience, it's usually scavvies behind plague zombies. They use them as mobile cover, as I usually have to shoot the closest target.

Bastards.

There aren't enough Necrons in the games, and they are my favorite race :(  Guess it's for the better cause if they are properly represented, Necrons win. End of story. I mean, how the hell are you going to win against robot zombies that use weapons that rip you apart at the molecular level. That then repair themselves if they get damaged. IIRC even the space marines don't generally win against the necrons, and when they do it's at pretty heavy casualties.

It's because Necrons lack character.  They're boring.  There are like five different units and they're all variations on "Big metal skeleton that slowly walks/glides forward while shooting"

Means a better Firepower-to-Character ratio. Less character means firepower's more dominant.

This, pretty much. Read any 40k fiction and it underscores exactly how boring they are to deal with after the first time.

after the first time.
You're doing it wrong. (well actually the authors are, I guess)
The whole point of Necrons is that you're not supposed to win against them (in the fluffs I mean- in the game they should be as powerful as the opponent or it's not fair)

P.S. On the big-skeleton issue, don't they have all those bug-things like they did in Dawn of War?

Yes.  Let's run down the list:

Not cool:
Warriors - Metal skeleton what walks forward and shoots
Reapers (Or something) - Metal skeleton with flesh what deep strikes and slashes
Destroyers - Metal skeleton what glides forward and shoots
Lords - Metal Skeleton what revives other metal skeletons
Nightbringer - Pretty cool, but completely out of place and therefor not cool.
Deceiver - Hmmm...

Cool:
Tomb Spyders - Big scarabs what kill vehicles and squeeze people
Scarabs - Little scarabs what kill vehicles and make the other player want to quit
Monoliths - Big pyramids what float around and fuck everything up

They have three cool units.  Nightbringer would be in the cool list but he doesn't fit with the rest of the army.  Same with the Deceiver.

I have to disagree with you there- metal skeletons are cool . They're just all the same, so all the ones after the first are no longer cool. :-\
Also, since when did they get a (the?) deceiver?

In DoW: Dark Crusade, after a certain research the Necron Lord has the ability to temporarily become a manifestation of either the Nightbringer or the Deceiver*.

Not to mention they've pretty much always had them in the tabletop.

I've heard that GW are seeking to inject more character into non-C'tan necrons. Already lords are meant to have some remnant of their original personality, and there are rumours they will get more of this (especially the special characters) and other necron get more personality too. That may improve their chances of getting into games.

They had a hint of that in the Blood Angels codex, but that was probably just Mat Ward typing with his face as usual.
