That said, wtf is with how small that las cannon is? Space Marines are not 15 feet tall. That las cannon looks like a las rifle in his hands.

You talking about in the Dev Diary 2? If so, that is a Las Rifle, not a Las Cannon. Probably taken from a fallen Imperial Guardsmen, like Cthulhu said.

To be fair, the developer does call it a Las Cannon, so nenjin's not totally off-base in his criticism.  :P

Either way, I'm warily excited about this game. Whether it's a game for lore junkies is debatable; honestly, having only minimal 40k experience (yeah, I've only played the video games, gimme a break.  :P ), I'm mostly just interested in the combat. Sadly, for a "combat dev diary", there wasn't a single shot of more than a few continuous seconds of combat, so at the moment any attempt to critique the combat engine is ridiculous, but still - highly violent, third-person, melee-focused combat? Unless they totally screw this up, it'll at least be decent.

I'd still rather wait until release (or at least until the first reviews) before purchasing, though. Just call me wary.  :-\

Does it strike anyone as a little odd that, in a license with so many interesting potential characters, they decided only to let the player play as the one which is already a cliche in the FPS genre and make everyone else just 'bad guys'?

No, not really. Now, I agree there are a lot of other potential candidates for player characters, some way better than the average space marine.

But in this time and age of xenophobia, going with the super human is the only choice that makes sense. They will already get all sort of complaints about violence, imagine what would happen if they pictured the player as a monster killing humans. Rating panels will not bother wit the background lore of who's good and bad.

You mean like they did in Fire Warrior?

and his enemy where not really humans, but chaos spawns. then came the 'good' humans ultramarines and help the protagonist win the chaos war.

Which you slaughtered a crapload of before allying of. These weren't "bad" marines. They just didn't ally until later, so yes you were indeed SLAUGHTERING good ultramarines before chaos even showed up, even the battle reports stated this (cathartic I say, needs to be done more often.)

To be fair some variants ARE that small, such as the Lascannon MK VII, which was twice the length of a bolter and made more handheld because some chapters needed to be on the move, such as Deathwatch, which even had heavy bolters that could be fired on the move.

You have to remember, there are variations between the weaponry in the galaxy, the Adeptas Mechancius does help change up some things once in a while when asked to (or their feeling generous)

If you compare this one with the gun in the trailer, you can see its near the exact same size.  :)

No.  That was definitely a lascannon, and a space marine probably couldn't even get his finger into the trigger guard of a guardsman's las rifle.  It'd be comically small on him.

I saw an interview with one of the dudes... He said a 10 hours campaign was a lengthy one... I removed it from my wishlist right there.

Honestly, with how little time I have lately, that's a perfect length campaign for me.

I'd assume that the space marine, if he really wanted to, would pull the trigger /through/ the trigger guard.

I'd probably be a bit more interested if the plot wasn't an exact copy of the original dawn of war. You are a space marine, you fight orks. Suddenly, chaos(and a few hints towards eldar dickery)!

Edit: plot isn't spelled with an "a".

Eh. A real plot would require something more than running around and smashing face, which I think is beyond this game's purview.

Like most 40k games though, I hope it does well, because one more successful title gets us that much closer to someone greenlighting a 40k project with real, true promise.

Think it would have a strategy element, like BF2?
