The only thing I read that could make this seem more awesome was on penny-arcade.

New fairly lengthy video detailing how combat works.

TBH, I'm not that excited about all the details. I've done my dues in Dynasty Warriors, I'm used to killing 30+ guys at a time with one dude for 30 minutes straight. These enemies don't look quite so much like paper dolls, but they are grass and you are the lawn mower.

It makes me chuckle that they've basically inverted the logic for typical 3rd Person Action games, so now you get health by being in combat, not out of it, and are trying to sell it as revolutionary. It's not, fellas.

I knew it was a little too much to hope that the mechanics was going to be believable to a 40k fan. And the amount of blood they throw out seems kind of ridiculous, even for 40k. You kill a dude with anything and he explodes in huge red clouds of blood half the time.

Still, I'm a sucker for anything 40k and Fire Warrior was a long time ago. I can only hope game play is just an ounce more refined or diverse than the video shows, because 8 levels of stomping out guts with a SM, and doing nothing else, sound repetitive already.

And yeah, you read that thread date right. Can't believe it's taken them this long to finish it, development hell or not.

With the game mechanics they're going for, wouldn't Blood Angels have been a better choice for chapter?

Game mechanics AND game looks? That much blood just shouts "Blood Angels".

GWS is pathologically driven to present the Ultramarines as the face of Space Marines. Plenty of people would prefer other chapters, but then plenty of people would prefer something other than the Spesh Mahreens too.

I agree Blood Angels would have made the most sense. But they didn't want to write any emo vampire backstory. :P

Everyone hates Ultramarines.

Hell, game plot idea for Blood Angels: You're a member of a Death Company. As you fight over the next few days, you keep getting flashbacks, hallucinations, etc. The final boss is a fight between you and a Chaos Lord (or Daemon or whatever you want) and Sanguinis (who you're playing as) and Horus which keeps switching between them.

Voila, done.

They're not making this game for 40k fans. I think that's pretty obvious. They're making this game for people who know nothing about 40k and who are going to get sucked in by the sight of an 8-foot tall guy in power armor beating the shit out of things. Compared to the ugly humps that are guys in Gears of War, 40k definitely already has the ability to appeal to that market.

It takes one or two titles in a series before GWS advises them to roll out the deeper fluff. Been true of most 40k games I've played. And the Blood Angels stuff is definitely moderate-range fluff, since it references the Heresy and the Primarchs and that's beyond the base knowledge of the universe.

That said, wtf is with how small that las cannon is? Space Marines are not 15 feet tall. That las cannon looks like a las rifle in his hands.

Aren't bolters supposed to be firing miniature rockets that basically assplode after they enter someone? I think it'd be pretty accurate compared to most other WH40k games, then. The mechanics complains I heard were, for example, about how bolters in Dawn of War were plain fast-firing machineguns.

Then again, spehs mahreens and their equipment are always portrayed as more badass in lore than they are in any gameplay mechanics, so I guess you could look at it either way.

It's not so much that level of detail of like, explosive bolter shells, more like the health regen system. Space Marines have all sorts of shit built into their armor, but not freaking nanobots that rebuild damaged flesh per second. There are all sorts of subtleties to Space Marine physiology that are great fodder for game play mechanics.....but no one ever uses them, because they're more focused on delivering unbroken combat sequences or not making Space Marines appear mortal too often. Space Marines being able to filter deadly gas? Cure their bloodstream of toxins? Rely on a backup heart when critically injured? Go days without eating or sleeping? Breath underwater for 20 or 30 minutes at a time?

About the only mechanic that isn't cool or sensible to include is their poison spitting glands.

Don't mind me though. I'm obsessed with the idea of a 40k FPS that makes the most of the lore for gameplay purposes.

Imperial Fists are Best Fists.

But yeah, saw a tech demo for this aaaaaages ago, was not impressed. This new combat video, though, shows ranged combat being less about stunlocking an enemy while you close, which is a bloody nice step up from the alternative.

Oh and if you pre-purchase now, $5 bucks off, the Blood Ravens Chapter pack for free (Yay, have the shitty retconned Chapter for DLC to bump up Dawn of War sales!) and a free copy of Darksiders.

THQ must be desperate to make money on this game. Not desperate enough to charge less than full price, though.

The world definitely isn't. 40k has a long and gory history. The game play mode is something 40k fans have wanted for a long time. There's no doubt it will pull stuff from other games in its genre...but no, it's pretty safe to say Space Marine isn't a rip off.

And it's about as far from Mass Effect as you could possibly get. You don't sleep with Xenos in 40k, you shoot them before they eat your soul.

I'm looking forward to this game. I hope it will be full of mindless fun, even if it's not 100% accurate.

we have way to much shooter where you're just overpowered because devs are too lazy to optimize the game for having many enemy on screen.
